It's a factorial design, so we can decompose the disclosure effect vs. effect of generated appearance. There's a penalty for AI use in perceptions of the photo itself, but not of the person in the photo. And the quality increase of the AI photos exceeds the penalty.
A research graphic shows two matched pairs of headshots. Each row places a real photograph on the left and an AI-generated version of the same person on the right. A findings panel reports that AI generation modestly raised photo-quality ratings and AI disclosure lowered them, with no reliable average effects on social attractiveness or trustworthiness. The preregistered experiment included 817 U.S. adults.

New pub alert: Collaboration with our PhD students @ USC. We were interested in the practice of making a headshot of yourself via generative AI. It's you in the photo, but it's not a photo of you. People like the AI photos better, but don't like that they're AI. cyberpsychology.eu/article/view...
A research graphic shows matched headshots of the same woman: a real photograph on the left and an AI-generated version on the right. It reports that AI-generated photos received higher quality ratings, but labeling a photo as AI-generated reduced perceived quality. The preregistered experiment included 817 U.S. adults.

Am I the only one who is finding it hard to go through their institution's approval processes quickly enough to get registered to ICA just two weeks post- acceptance notification? (I know it's not *required* but I've always been able to get hotel reservations day-of-release before)
Screenshot from ICA conference website showing key dates: 15 January — ICA headquarters releases acceptances & conference registration opens.

31 January — Registration deadline for being in the "early access" group for the hotel booking link

It does recommend going to AP and other places for more details, but no links and doesn't make clear whether those sources informed its responses.

Gemini gives me an accurate rundown of financial market news of the day but never shares the primary sources with me in the response (including the part I clip out). Especially interesting given that it makes reference to the "search results" as if it's something we're both looking at

I like breaking out a chart like this when discussing measurement error with my students
A chart showing the distribution of US male heights, both as measured and as self-reported. Self-reported heights are slightly higher on average, mostly because there are fewer men reporting heights in the 5-foot-8 through 5-foot-11 range and an excess of them in the 6-foot-0 through 6-foot-2 range

An interesting claim since while they do show acceptance rates increasing, the only time they discuss the qualifications of the admitted students, the university states they have also increased. You can increase acceptance rates without making it easier to get in, you know 🤓
Washington Post headline that reads, "It’s becoming easier to get into many colleges; Despite common perception, acceptance rates are going up."

I started to wonder whether it was being raised by the local songbirds. Had a sibling (I think) that would usually stand by. Been a little bit since we've seen any but there's usually an adult somewhere near our house. Can hear their hilarious calls in the early evenings
