Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 03/10/2026came across this baseball card with four guys, all of whom had rather interesting names 000
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 04/09/2026And to make sure our results wouldn't be too confined to some particular kind of generative output or type of person, we used 12 different photo subjects, 6 men + 6 women with racial diversity among them. Results were consistent across these variations. 000
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 04/09/2026The appeal of these apps that produce AI-generated headshots is that it lets you use your casual photos to make a professional-looking one. To compare whether there's a reputational tradeoff in generating a headshot, we used professional photos as the comparison. 100
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 04/09/2026It's a factorial design, so we can decompose the disclosure effect vs. effect of generated appearance. There's a penalty for AI use in perceptions of the photo itself, but not of the person in the photo. And the quality increase of the AI photos exceeds the penalty. 100
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 04/09/2026New pub alert: Collaboration with our PhD students @ USC. We were interested in the practice of making a headshot of yourself via generative AI. It's you in the photo, but it's not a photo of you. People like the AI photos better, but don't like that they're AI. cyberpsychology.eu/article/view... 100
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 13/02/2026I caved and bought a hobby at the local shop. And it looks like this pull will pay me back with room to spare! 110
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 12/02/2026I did my pre-order along with Stadium Club so they're holding onto it until the 18th 😭 110

Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 19/01/2026Been trying to compile notes of thanks received for my R packages and just noticed that one person complimented me on the package's "well-written vinaigrettes" 😂 120
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 09/12/2025No doubt that communication faculty publish less than peers in those other fields, although one wonders how much of that comes from limited opportunity in our journals! (probably not the major factor is my guess) 000
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 09/12/2025Well I don't have a strong view on the right amount of publications without more thought, TBH. I can say in the US, there are >2x communication students compared to political science. Roughly equal amounts compared to psych. Faculty to student ratios likely lower in comm. though. 200

Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 07/12/2025(This is not to badmouth South Carolina, which has some good ones. And I don't know whether it's a good expenditure of money anyway) Fun feature of these things is when there's a yearly cap and you don't know if it will run out before your acceptance 010
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 07/12/2025Yeah I am probably wrongly assuming that my uni's agreements (which largely only cover hybrid journals where you don't *have* to pay to publish) are as good as it gets. In fact now I check and see that my alma mater has some pretty author-friendly agreements 110
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 07/12/2025Currently deliberating spending a grand of my own money to get a paper into a decent OA journal that doesn't charge quite so much. Wonder what the ROI for a journal pub is... 000
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 07/12/2025How are my fellow comm researchers affording these $2K-$4K open access fees 🤔 420
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 02/12/2025aw shucks, we probably don't even have software to do a fancy pants model like that 010
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 02/12/2025Pirates who ripped their early 2000s DVD releases are the only ones making the show available in something like its original state 020
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 02/12/2025Even affects stuff that isn't exactly "high art." This summer I decided I wanted to watch old eps of Roseanne. All official channels have really bastardized it: it's cropped (lot of weird compositions as a result), scenes are chopped up to cut time for syndication, and it has a horrific AI upscale 120

Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 14/10/2025TIL that the "journey" part of the word "journeyman" has nothing to do with travel. I always associated it with veteran athletes who often bounced from team to team on short-term deals (you might say journeyed!). But turns out "journey" is just anglicized French for "entire day" 010
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 14/10/2025To clarify, for the first position we seek "environmental, risk, or science communication" focus! 011

Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 07/10/2025FWIW, this is T&F submission tracker so IDK if it says "with editor" while editor is waiting for reviewers to agree to review. Last time I submitted something through them it went from "with editor" to "out for review" in 9 days 000
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 07/10/2025What's your threshold for how long a journal submission can stay "with editor" after initial submission before you start asking questions? 200
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 30/09/2025I saw some cardinals looking sad on my fence as it rained. That means their franchise has no direction at the moment 110
Jacob Long @jacob-long.com · 26/09/2025Something that becomes clear whenever I'm engaged in the peer review process (either as author or reviewer), I care a lot less about capital-T Theory than most of my peers. Something I must have inherited from the political science side of my education... 010
