This Dracula season, please don't forget there's a cowboy in that book. A lot of cowboy erasure in the Dracula community!

Browning doesn’t forget that this is a horror movie though, and the finale is appropriately thunderous and twisted. He leaves us with another important lesson: don’t break the code of the freaks—you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us. Gooble-Gobble.

Browning’s casting subverts audience expectations while holding up a mirror to our biases, showing us the humanity in the other. He treats the performers with the dignity they’re owed, making the fracturing of their found family feel all the more tragic.

Audiences and studio execs in 1932 didn’t know what to do with “Freaks”, but its success with more open-minded viewers on the midnight circuit and in the decades that followed proved this film had a home. As a queer person, one horror rings especially true: chasing acceptance only leads to ruin.

In “Freaks”, the harmony between a group of sideshow performers is jeopardized when one of them becomes infatuated by a beautiful trapeze artist. The inclusion of real performers shocked audiences, and in response, MGM made extensive cuts and the film was banned in multiple countries.

If Tod Browning’s name sounds somewhat familiar, he’s most famous for directing Universal’s “Dracula”, but before that he was a vaudeville performer and carny—an occupation that would inspire several of his earliest pictures and eventually, “Freaks”.

One of my favorite genre tropes is also one of the most relatable: the strange and unusual as benign in the face of real, human evil. This week’s #hauntalong pick is one of the earliest examples of that in cinema. Tonight, we celebrate the freaks. Tod Browning’s “Freaks” in particular.

The CHC Haunt-along continues! Today we're going to talk about the Russian supernatural horror film VIY! It's the story of a young seminarian who's forced into a three day face-off with the forces of darkness.
Poster art for the film VIY featuring the film title in big block text just above an enormous red monster with goofy flapped over rabbit ears, gem-like eyes, short arms, a prodigious stomach... looks like it's zombie-walking. It's surrounded by little bald blue guys wearing rags who seem to be in awe of it.

Grandier is an imperfect protagonist, while Sister Jeanne's motives are rooted in systemic oppression--ultimately, they're both instruments in a game played by men who use these events as a smokescreen to mask selfish intents. All we can do is watch in horror as lies snowball into an avalanche.

So why Haunt-Along? What makes it horror? Arguably, it's not a horror movie--certainly not a Halloween horror movie. It's undeniably horrific though. We see in garish detail the victims of the plague, the violent exorcisms of nuns, and most horrifying, the hypocrisies of power-hungry men.

Russell and his collaborators are firing on all cylinders. The leads are arresting--Oliver Reed's Grandier is a bombastic lothario who never feels lecherous, while Vanessa Redgrave is vicious and complex as the disabled Sister Jeanne. Everything feels provocative, lavish, and transgressive.

For the uninitiated, the film adapts Huxley's "The Devils of Loudun" and the play it spawned by John Whiting. Based on true events, we see the fortified commune of Loudun plunged into hysterics after a sexually-repressed nun accuses a charismatic priest of possessing her and her order with devils.

My introduction to Ken Russell was at too young an age, with his more straightforward horror fare, "Lair of the White Worm". It primed me for what is considered to be opus. I knew of its reputation, and sometime in the early 2010s, I got a bootleg dvd of it. Needless to say it blew my mind.

Time for another #hauntalong recommendation! Today I’m recommending Vincenzo Natali’s Cube (1997), a Canadian sci-fi horror movie about a group of strangers who wake up inside a giant maze of identical rooms. Some of the rooms are safe. Some of them are super not safe.

The leaves are changing, the skies are gray, and that can only mean one thing: Haunt-Along! My first Haunt-Along pick is Saint Maud, a delightfully unsettling piece of religious horror from director Rose Glass. It's about loneliness, faith, guilt, and a little bit of murder.

Hunter is seeking over $500K over an alleged kick to the head on the
