The NHS Wales Commissioning Committee has forced the Welsh Gender Service to suspend all gender-affirming surgeries.

This nakedly cruel policy shift will wreak havoc on the lives of Welsh trans people. it will force patients into months of limbo that massively disrupt their lives, while NHS higher-ups take their sweet time to cook up yet another sham "investigation".

at worst, patients will be driven into worse mental health and suicidality. despite government cover-ups, we all know the true statistics about our community.

The Welsh gender care system, while not perfect, is one of the best in the uk, and delivered for trans people by collaborating with the community and with GP surgeries, proving that positive change is possible.

This massive u-turn comes under pressure from the Welsh Tories, whipped into a frenzy by a terf blogger and Murdoch rag ‘The Times’, which claimed that wales having higher surgery referral rates than England somehow proves that harm is done.

that’s all it took to obliterate healthcare for hundreds of trans people.

When the NHS talk about “concerns regarding referral appropriateness” they mean they want cis people to have more control over our bodies. But I take the much simpler stance that if someone wants to change sex that’s their business. Like abortion or fertility help it should be fast and on demand.

As far as we know no news outlet has picked up this story yet so we feel a duty to inform our followers.

We welcome the organic response already forming in the trans community, but its clear that the current methods of marches, lobbying and so on are no longer sufficient.

Trans people and our cis allies need to organise to directly take on the transphobic apparatus denying us healthcare, and keep working to build strong DIY networks in the meantime.

“It’s a strange thing to spend almost twelve years of your life without language,” begins chapter one of Jason Arday’s forthcoming memoir, Great and Unfortunate Things.

This claim – that Arday was illiterate and could not speak until just before secondary school – is one of the book’s most incredible, given the heights of academia he would go on to reach. But it is by no means the only one relating to his school days in south London.

Indeed, the ex-Cambridge professor recounts how, as a young boy, he was only able to attend mainstream school for one day a week. When he built up to full-time, Arday claims, he was frequently removed from class on account of disruptive behaviour and “whisked… away to a small room with one solitary window”. He says he could not read or write until he was taught to do so by a girlfriend, aged 18.

The University of Cambridge will review its HR procedures after losing an employment tribunal that found it had “shut down” a whistleblower.

Prof Deborah Prentice, the vice-chancellor, said she had asked for “an audit of our HR procedures and practices” after the case.

Prof Wyn Evans, a professor of astrophysics within Cambridge’s Institute of Astronomy, brought the case and claimed he had been victimised after raising concerns about bullying and misogyny at the university.

Prof Prentice was implicated personally in the tribunal for “mishandling” the professor’s complaints, and has been accused of a failure of leadership.

She is also under mounting pressure over the Jason Arday fiasco.

Trying to get in as well rounded a view of the issues at stake here is a deliberate choice by Davies. Spit & Polish's employees are mostly a younger generation of LGBTQ+ people. He sought advice from the writer Juno Dawson, with whom he worked on Doctor Who, about how to portray the trans characters in the show, including the charming and endearing employee Zee (Iz Hesketh). Stephanie (Elizabeth Berrington), Leo's close friend whom we see throughout the series, is gender-critical - believing that biological sex cannot be changed from birth.
"I wanted all sorts of voices in there," says Davies. "I've got friends who are gender-critical. It's only online you end up screaming and shouting and being attacked by them. In real life, you have a chat, and we all kind of sigh and put up with each other. That's how the world works. It's actually how the world is ceasing to work." As terrifying violence looms towards the end of the series, Stephanie and Zee end up on the same side.
