I turned to MonkeyExplains to understand. What I learned, as the bond rate goes up, loans (mortgages, auto, student, etc) goes up as well. Business face higher costs to borrow money, including the govt. Means people don't buy as much or cannot afford as much, so things slow down. High rate is bad.

One time, we had the CEO coming to do a walk around. Us Security folks tossed up some screensavers that looked like something technical was going on & we all pretended to stare at it while making notes. The CEO mentioned to our boss he was highly impressed at how hard we were working.
