Tired of reading book proposals (and books) that claim an interpretation is “new” when it isn’t. How about reading widely first to see where that interpretation fits in the larger field? This used to be a given but the rush to publish has hurt us all.

NEW: Trump has announced that the US will admit the lowest level of refugees ever at 7,500 in FY 2026. The US will only be admitting as refugees White people from South Africa and "victims of illegal or unjust discrimination," which leaked memos suggest means far-right Europeans.

I've been writing publicly for YEARS about unis starving the humanities of funding & pitching it towards AI. The AI-developed Comp Lit course at UCLA is just some toes in the water. We're going to see much more of this if faculty don't resist. My piece from 2021: theconversation.com/how-ai-is-hi...
For years, university humanities departments have been gradually squeezed of funding, with more money funneled into the sciences. With their claims to objectivity and empirically provable results, the sciences tend to command greater respect from funding bodies and the public, which offers an incentive to scholars in the humanities to adopt computational methods.

Seeking Asylum in the U.S. : Throughline
The U.S. has long professed to be a country where people can seek refuge. That's the promise etched into the base of the Statue of Liberty. But it's never been that clear-cut.Today on the show, the story of how the U.S. asylum system was forged in response to moments of crisis, and where it left gaps: from Jewish refugees fleeing the Holocaust, to Cuban and Haitian asylum seekers during the Cold War, to the precarious system of today. To access bonus episodes and listen to Throughline sponsor-free, subscribe to Throughline+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org/throughline.
