... So anyway, when I did filter the software down to where birds started showing up for "elegant" by filtering on camera type (most of my bird pictures are taken with my standalone camera, and my phone camera takes more cat pictures), the first several pictures it presented were all low-light things with lots of noise. Eventually it presented this bird in a different pose, so I went searching for the picture I knew I had of this bird in a better pose.

Anyway, the conclusion is that AI is not ready to curate my bird pictures, at least not the cheap kind that can be incorporated into open source software I run on my own machine.

At my first job I had a coworker ask me what automated lines meant when they said "press 1 if you have a touch-tone phone", because what is the alternative? He'd never used a rotary phone, because he'd grown up in a place with no phone service. When they finally got phone service, it was all tones.

One good thing about social media is that it seems to have largely killed off the forwarded-via-email conspiracy hoaxes. Of course, it did that in part by changing things so that people don't use email nearly as much any more, and many of the hoaxes have evolved to replicate on social media.

A Rose-ringed Parakeet in a beech tree eating a beech nut that it pulled off the tree. I like this series for showing how the bird did this: plucking the beech husk off the tree with its beak and then balancing on one foot while using the other like a hand to hold the husk as it dug out the nut. Some of these shots turned out not as sharp as I'd like, but I think this one is pretty good.
