I’m surprised that the movie Stranger Than Fiction never came up during the episode, given their essential contribution to the soundtrack. I can’t be the only under-informed music fan who came to Spoon through that movie. (Also: good movie if you haven’t seen it)

For anyone who thinks increasing oil & gas production is the path to energy independence, you're dead wrong. While we continue to rely on fossil fuels, we're held hostage to global pricing. The real path to energy security is local production of renewables and grid-scale storage. #EnergyTransition

While Prime Minister Full-Speed-Ahead-On-Climate-Arson-Without-Even-Pretending-To-Care-About-Our-Climate-Obligations eliminates our already weak climate targets, Toronto has the very worst air quality on Earth today due to climate-worsened extreme wildfires. 🇨🇦🔥🧵 1/ www.ctvnews.ca/toronto/weat...
A distressing photograph of Toronto's skyline under a thick pall of wildfire smoke turning the sky a hideous and dangerous orange.

Overlying text reads: Just one week of wildfire smoke cost Ontario more than $1.2 Billion in additional health care costs. Mark Carney tells us that meeting what were already pathetically weak emissions targets is "too expensive."

Tried this and 1. Yeah I’m in these models all right 2. Even these tiny summaries contained an outright fabrication (I did not create AI Dungeon) and half-truths (I am way more “random science blogger” than “researcher” when it comes to “AI”)
Result screenshot from InTheWeights.com for Janelle Shane. Summary reads “AI Researcher and author”, 858 strength, top 2%. Bars are shown for like 14 different LLMs, and the page is showing the snippet generated by QWEN 8B which says “AI researcher and creator of the AI Dungeon game, known for her work in machine learning and natural language processing”

Last and least, FWIW, my current AI policy for students. Subject to revision. Recommendations welcome.
Artificial Intelligence and Creative Writing: A Policy of Sorts
This is a course for those interested in writing not as means to an end but as an end in itself.
Recently a friend and I read a cover story in New York magazine titled, “Everyone is Cheating Their
Way Through College,” by James D. Walsh. My friend has also taught writing. He likes to tell his
students, “If you want to be a writer, put on a cool hat and go sit in a bar with cheap beer. If you want to
write, write.”
I didn’t think AI would be a temptation for writing students. “Everyone is Cheating Their Way
Through College” persuaded me that for many it’s not a temptation but a condition. You sleep in a bed,
you wear clothes, you don’t scream at teachers. Just the way it is. Maybe AI is becoming that, too, part
of “just the way it is.” Maybe it is that already.
My mind raced through ideas about how to “beat” AI. The article dismantled each one of them.
Then I thought, “That’s not my job.” I’m a writer and a teacher. I’m not a cop. If you want to work with
me on writing, we can do that. If you want to cheat, you have the ability to do that, too, and the truth is,
I probably can’t stop you. Per Dartmouth’s policy: “Students may not use GenAI tools for submitted
coursework unless expressly permitted.” I do not permit it. That’s my part. Now, about yours.
I’m interested in working with students for whom writing feels, somehow, good, even if
sometimes it’s painful. Who seek that feeling anyway. A feeling of being, of alertness. Of purpose; of
intention. Of practice.
This is a course for those who are interested in using writing to experience some variation of
this feeling. Sometimes it comes in a moment of clarity, sometimes in the making of a lyrical
juxtaposition. There are so many more emotional, intellectual, and spiritual possibilities that arise from
the act of shaping language. I live off the aftermath of that act—the recognitions, financial and
otherwise, I earn from the results—but there is no payche…

I just learned that the term "carbon footprint" was developed by BP to offload responsibility for climate change onto individuals. Something like that's happening in higher ed with AI. Institutions capitulate or dodge; students are submitting; & they believe it's their individual failing. 7/

In my case, I obtained a gmail address in 2004 and was able to secure a very simple one, of the form <firstname>@gmail.com, where <firstname> happens to be a common given name in southeast Asia. So lots of people enter it on random forms, try to use it as a recovery address, and so on.

Welcome to my gmail inbox basically every morning. A bunch of people in Indonesia and Malaysia using my address for various online services, or attempting to use it as a recovery address. (Oh, and this leaves out the person who recently used my address for their car insurance in India.)
A screenshot of an inbox, split into two columns. A few messages are redacted. The remaining messages are all "wrong-number emails", messages attempting to use my email address for their own purposes. Most of them are attempts to recover google account for which my address is the recovery address, or attempts to set my address as a recovery address, or attempts to log in to services (e.g., TikTok) using my address.
