It took more than 3,000 emails, close to 80 hours of work, and turned further hairs white, but it is great to finally hold the printed proceedings from this year's Bridges #Mathart conference in hand! Kudos to Eve Torrence (managing editor), the other editors, and the authors!

Any mapping is necessarily a kind of flattening, distortions happen, information lost. "Not even the most expansive mapping can convey everything" or, to quote Alfred Korzybski, "the map is not the territory"
excerpt from a page in Unflattening - upper part shows the globe encircled (like the Daily Planet) with the letters Circumnavigation. this casts a shadow on a flat map - the mercator project of the globe. Discussion of the distortions that happen when you go from 3 dimensions to two - information lost and connections severed. Below this is a similar arrangement, an icosahedron instead of a globe, and then a map made by unfolding that icosahedron. This is Buckminster Fuller's dymaxion map. It preserves area in ways the mercator could not, and it also shows connections where the mercator showed divisions. That said, it's not super clear for how you travel across the globe...

3-panel SMBC comic update. A man wearing glasses stands at a podium, declaring: "at last we've overthrown the economists! From now on the nation's finances shall be run by mathematicians!" Shortly after, the same mathematician declares: "as of today, money will be denominated in complex numbers. The public's long wait for an algebraically closed currency is at an end!" The next panel shows a news article headline: "ECONOMY CRASHES - Nation's money accidentally rotated 90 degrees, now imaginary. Mathematicians (quoted): "calm down, absolute value unchanged."

These three LEGO designs celebrate several topological structures. A model of Borromean rings is constructed in red, green, and blue; the brick dimensions offer just enough tolerance to feel the rings are separate. An orderly tangle of six squares is constructed from six layered squares made of white and tan plates. A double layered cube based on a design by Rinus Roelofs is constructed from three layers of plates.
