Up in the Bronx today, smoking a respectable distance from the wooden picnic tables outside An Beal Bocht. Older kinda disheveled guy is at one of them eating a slice. Noticed him because I was hoping he would not ask me for a smoke. He gets up and starts walking by me, then takes a header into

Reading up on the WWI declarations of war and it was absolute madness. Japan declares war on Bulgaria! Liberia declares war on Germany! I think some countries had never even met one another before declaring war. No wonder everyone drank bootleg liquor for a decade in the aftermath.

Guys were coming up out of moldy basements with old treaties everyone forgot about. Blowing dust off them was probably like doing a scratch off card at the deli counter, like "Congratulations! You are at war with The Grand Duchy Of Von Horkenberger" except it's now technically known as "Germany"

Someone posted a cap from a Jackie Chan movie on here and now I'll be watching Police Story this weekend. The mall fight from the first is absolutely legendary, but I'm really partial to the parking lot fight. That jump kick and smash into the windshield at 0:36 is sublime.

My grandfather had two scrapbooks full of photographs and postcards from when he was in WWII. He was a medic at the Battle of the Bulge and saw opening scene of Saving Private Ryan level war, but also saw Europe. Pretty cool for a guy from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.

There is truth in the exhortation to Let People Enjoy Things, and at the same time we must liberate ourselves from the polite inhibition and fear of being labeled a Snob that prevents us from saying "this shit sucks, there is far better to be had, and I know it" because people need to learn somehow.

20+ years ago the great Mary Courtney used to play at Rocky Sullivans and dipshits like me would urge her to play the rebs. She knew them all, but knew better songs too, many of which I had never heard until she played them for us. She is a New York legend, been too long since I've seen her.

I agree with this take from someone who did not want to be reposted, apologies to them. But I am not embarrassed, because I have always known that shitlibs represent a majority of people opposed to Trump, and by extension the greater number of voters. Antifascist sentiment is far rarer than this.
Trump hasn't dropped in popularity
cuz millions of Americans went "Wait
a minute... you're a FASCIST!" and
recoiled in disgust. It's cuz he doesn't
make them feel good, anymore. And
that was the whole point.

They feel poorer, ignored, and
bamboozled. The shitlibs were right.
That's embarrassing. 2/2

An excellent piece. I am old. I was a college student in the late 1980s and early 1990s. So little has changed for the better since then. And the same kind of things go unpunished, while others are targeted specifically.
If you're an outsider to American universities, you might think that students
are simply out of control, and that disciplinary processes are similarly lax for
other infringements. But that is not accurate. Compare this to how the
university punishes protesters. In the spring of 2024, Cornell issued
temporary suspensions for four students protesting the war in Gaza.
Specifically, these students urged the university to divest its holdings in
companies that supported the genocide of Palestinians. To draw more
attention to their cause, they staged the protest in a central area of campus
where protests are not permitted without authorization. One of these
students was my own advisee, and having supported her throughout the the
months-long case, I can state with confidence that she did nothing wrong.
Moreover, she happens to be deaf and was suspended in part for being
"unreasonably loud." Privacy considerations prevent me from saying more
about her case here, but let me just add that I will always be angry with
Cornell for how they treated her. And Momodou Taal, an international Ph.D.
student, was ultimately suspended twice by Cornell for protesting, following
the university's humiliating disciplinary processes (which I have witnessed
firsthand as I supported my own student during them). Ultimately, the
Trump administration demanded Taal surrender himself to Immigration
and Customs Enforcement, and he chose to flee the country rather than risk
being abducted. He remains abroad, having effectively self-deported.
