Perspectives on Preregistration Nice review of the different perspectives on preregistration by Yke Bauke Eisma and Joost de Winter. Preprint: www.researchgate.net/publication/...
The replication crisis has accelerated the adoption of open science practices, with study preregistration having emerged as a vital, yet contested, reform. This review synthesizes the discourse surrounding preregistration into four perspectives: (1) Idealist, (2) Pragmatist, (3) Skeptic, and (4) Innovator. Idealists view preregistration as essential to hypothesis testing by separating confirmatory and exploratory analyses and preventing HARKing and p-hacking. Pragmatists highlight workable infrastructure, including templates, registries, and deviation-reporting tools, in order to integrate preregistration into actual scientific workflows. Skeptics caution about the rigidity of preregistration, administrative burden, performative compliance, and displacement of deeper problems such as weak theory, as well as opportunities to game the system. Innovators extend preregistration through Registered Reports, adaptive and versioned plans, and computationally integrated pipelines that document exploration while preserving transparency. In conclusion, the discourse surrounding preregistration is not a simple debate between proponents and opponents but an interplay of diverse perspectives, with tensions between confirmatory rigor and exploratory discovery, and between top-down policies and bottom-up reform.

"Labeling the people or practices as 'Cargo Cult' is unlikely to be productive." New article by @statmodeling.bsky.social and Megan Higgs doi.org/10.1007/s111...
Over the past fifty years, the term “cargo cult” has been used to describe the actions of scientists who appear to follow forms of scientific inquiry but without the understanding and self-criticism that are essential to real scientific progress. The term has served a useful role by providing a short and catchy label to something that is otherwise difficult to explain. However, the term is also fraught with historical and cultural baggage and, in our opinion, encourages crossing of a subtle line between criticizing discipline methodological norms and criticizing the individuals currently carrying out those norms as part of a complex and context dependent social process. We find that carefully interrogating the term itself holds some important lessons for improvement in the science reform movement.

journals.uchicago.edu
Scientific Autonomy, Public Accountability, and the Rise of “Peer Review” in the Cold War United States | Isis: Vol 109, No 3
Abstract This essay traces the history of refereeing at specialist scientific journals and at funding bodies and shows that it was only in the late twentieth century that peer review came to be seen as a process central to scientific practice. Throughout the nineteenth century and into much of the twentieth, external referee reports were considered an optional part of journal editing or grant making. The idea that refereeing is a requirement for scientific legitimacy seems to have arisen first in the Cold War United States. In the 1970s, in the wake of a series of attacks on scientific funding, American scientists faced a dilemma: there was increasing pressure for science to be accountable to those who funded it, but scientists wanted to ensure their continuing influence over funding decisions. Scientists and their supporters cast expert refereeing—or “peer review,” as it was increasingly called—as the crucial process that ensured the credibility of science as a whole. Taking funding decisions out of expert hands, they argued, would be a corruption of science itself. This public elevation of peer review both reinforced and spread the belief that only peer-reviewed science was scientifically legitimate.
