You know a gene is selfish when its DNA twists the wrong way, as demonstrated by the left-handed double-helix proudly adorning the 50th Anniversary Edition of the multimillion copy bestseller on this topic.
The front cover of the 50th Anniversary Edition of the multimillion copy bestseller "The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins, featuring an image of DNA that is bold, colourful, and chirally incorrect.

New in PN: Republicans learn to love DOJ weaponization "With early voting underway, Omar got agents at her door at 6am, when her 14-year-old was inside, over a theory cooked up on an anonymous message board. Republicans never objected to weaponizing the DOJ. They just wanted custody of the weapon."

There is virtue, I believe, in the protection of the collective. Safeguarding the community is so much harder than lifting the ego. Anyways, join a union, fight inequality & reject the idea that any 1 is better than the health of the many. You know who taught us that? Plato (and later Rousseau).

But we're in a time in the world when no one really wants to do anything so boring as "pay to support the institutions that do the hard dull work of developing knowledge." And when I say "no one" I don't just mean the fascists. Slopulism is everywhere and everyone wants the fast easy answer.

My favorite example of this is the lab leak, where LEAKED SECRET SLACK MESSAGES show scientists going "wow, this could really be a lab leak," then investigating, finding no evidence and moving on. To this day conspiracy theorists claim the chats prove the leak is real.

Today I saw the new 4 hour documentary Musk, directed by Alex Gibney. There were too many times to count that a sold out theater burst out laughing at Elon Musk, something he said or did, even sometimes just how he looked. I believe that is his worst nightmare come to life.

Facebook really doesn't want you to see the new documentary exposing Elon Musk Neither do TikTok or Google or the eX social media site. Since they won't accept paid advertising, let's do some free advertising. Go see Musk in theaters October 9 www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/dig...

It is not a "grim choice" to support either a psychotic Republican or a mainstream center-left politician.
he Michigan Senate election has presented liberals with a grim choice. The Republican candidate, Mike Rogers, has pledged support for a corrupt, racist, authoritarian-minded administration. Rogers hasn’t made even the tiniest concession to Donald Trump critics. But supporting El-Sayed means accepting a strain of anti-Semitic politics that to date has had no place within the Democratic Party.

What’s more, El-Sayed has already said that he intends to use his victory as a platform to reshape the party. Him winning could invite a future in which the United States has not just one party that is open to bigots but two.

Although El-Sayed has never said anything nearly as inflammatory as the sorts of comments Piker makes routinely, his mixture of anti-Zionism and populism treats pro-Israel activism as a nefarious and all-pervasive force. He has denied that any Democrat who believes in human rights could have any motive other than money for holding a position on Israel different from the one he prefers. El-Sayed tends to depict nearly all opposition to his candidacy as financially driven, but when applied to Jewish political activity, this charge becomes even more conspiratorial.

I'm also not sure it should be necessary for anyone to have to explain that you cannot calculate a national average from a sample of 20 people, but apparently we have to seriously engage with every argument from scientific racists and not simply laugh them out of academia
Section of text

Small sample sizes are not a problem
Parra and Kirkegaard (2025; p9) claim “a sample of 20 can provide a reasonably precise estimate of a population mean”. Warne (2023; p202) argues a sample size of 96 is sufficient “to have a 95% confidence interval width of +/- 3 IQ points”, and that only five countries in the 2019 dataset fail to meet this criteria. Neither claim takes into account the need for national averages to be calculated from data which is representative of citizens of those nation-states. Data collection exercises which aim to be nationally representative involve much larger sample sizes, typically several thousand individuals, such as the example of Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) mentioned above (Corsi et al, 2012). At their inception in the 1980s, DHS sampled between 3,000-5,000 participants, and in the 2020s include 5,000-30,000. Nation-states often involve many millions of citizens, and considerable diversity across demographic and economic factors. Sample sizes of 20 or 96 individuals cannot hope to adequately reflect this diversity.

Some of the richest people in the world want a racial caste system, and they want scholarly backing for that in the form of racist pseudoscience. And a lot of ostensibly non racist people quietly agree, and don’t like to see those who peddle that pseudoscience excluded from mainstream institutions.

There's been a steadily building narrative among conservatives and centrists that the lab leak theory was suppressed, but when you look at both public and private statements of scientists they all said it was plausible and should be investigated. Absolutely infuriating how this gets memory-holed
