I love box crabs, probably because of the way their claws fit so neatly in with the carapace (and also, just look at it!). This is Calappa calappa, disturbed on a night dive in Lembeh and rapidly scuttling away from the bright lights. #MarineLife #Invertebrates #Wildlife 🌿🦀
A rounded crab with large claws that fit neatly into the space in front of its body. It is brown, with reddish spots on it; the claws have some lighter ridges on the lower parts and raised teeth on the upper parts. The crab is scuttling over black sand, although you can't see this in the photo because its legs are hidden. But trust me, it was *moving*

This is sexual violence as a form of terrorism. It is political violence and it is chilling and horrific, and AOC was absolutely right to be terrified that the goons (now pardoned) laying siege to the capital would rape her if they found her. Small changes won't fix this. FLIP THE TABLE NOW

TIL there’s a fish that lives in the lowest depths of the Congo River that has stunted growth, no color pigment, and no eyes. And locally it’s called “mondeli bureau,” which translates to “white man in an office” LMAO
A very small blind pasty white yellowish fish in the palm of someone’s hand. Lamprologus lethops, a fish that lives in the lower Congo River, is pale and blind like fish that dwell in caves deep underwater.

The painting is of a lotus pod full of seeds in front of a lotus leaf that is turning from green to yellow. A spider sits atop the seed pod and there are snail eggs on the stem. Only the leaf and stem are completely painted.

Lines often lighter on top surfaces and towards light source

Contours heavier than inner lines Subtle creases indicated by feathered/ broken lines

Lines heavier on bottom surfaces and away from light source

In real life, the boundaries and surfaces of objects are defined by contrast with their surroundings

In line art we rely on lines of varying thicknesses to define those elementsMy general rule of thumb (ha ha) is that if your nail would catch on a change in surface/edge, it should probably get a lineHeavier contour line weight

Lighter edge line weight

Heavier line weight on bottom helps give object some mass and begin to suggest shading

🌊 Paléontologie française: . Paris: Chez l'auteur, 1840-1894.. [Source]
Historical scientific illustration from "Paléontologie française" (1840-1894) depicting various fossilized sea urchin spines and cross sections. The image shows elongated cylindrical spines with distinct patterns of dark oval and round markings, as well as detailed cross-sectional views revealing internal geometric shapes and porous structures. Each specimen is numbered, highlighting differences in spine texture and form, with some having smooth surfaces and others showing segmented or patterned areas. The drawing emphasizes the morphological diversity of sea urchin spines from the Cretaceous period, providing insight into their skeletal anatomy and fossilized appearance. Text labels identify specific species and views.

I don’t remember whose insight this is, but it blew my mind when I first read that to understand American history you have to get that race law was designed to increase the number of enslavable people (one-drop rule) and decrease the number of claimants to indigenous land (blood quantum)
Jamelle Bouie writes: yeah this is a separate conversation but one of the things that hasn’t quite bubbled up from scholarship into mainstream thinking is that american slavery was a system centered principally on reproduction. forced birth for capital accumulation is what it was

Four silly looking black birds with shiny blue-purple hits on a shimmery green and blue background. Very rough looking but with movement like the wind is blowing them around.
