This whole thread up & down. Re: a recent NYT article on why Ebola & other outbreaks keep happening. Some folks seem to think "Ew just tell those Africans to stop cutting down the forests" is a real answer? And they get published in the NYT.

Long but very important thread. Ebola outbreaks will not be ended by "leaving the reservoir alone". Humans interface with nature, including in ways we don't notice. Pretending "if only people in Africa would leave the forests alone we'd all be fine" is pretty patronizing 😳

It unfortunately does not surprise me that these people exist. What constantly surprises (and horrifies) me is that they think it’s so normal that they will put it in the fucking newspaper.

For many years I wondered, "how bad will Republicans have to get before the media/political establishment in the US gets over its endless obsession with scolding & tone policing the left?" I think at this point we have to acknowledge that the answer is: never. Literally never.

To state the obvious: Republicans will use this as pretext to cut what’s left of the safety net. And Democrats will spend their next administration cleaning up Republicans’ mess. And then get blamed in the midterms for not having a magic wand with which to undo historic damage overnight.

@drdebhoury.bsky.social makes a key point here i wish more understood CDC was already spread thin before this term due to big cuts/congressional clawbacks the past four years. and before *that* it was consistently underfunded by congress. now we are seeing the crises compound…
Some 80% of senior leadership positions at the CDC still have no permanent officials appointed, and between 25 and 30% of the CDC's entire staff are gone.
"Those are boots on the ground," Houry said. "When you have Ebola, hantavirus, measles, and throw cyclospora in there - staffers were already spread thin, and now they're spread even more thin."

A thought from seeing the Discourse about authors being asked to share their drafts to combat AI- if you use any Office software it has saved a bunch of older versions. Other software may do the same thing, I don’t know.

On one hand, I think it's really good that younger queer people have no idea just how bad it was to be growing up queer in the era when Pete Buttigieg was a kid, but good god people, at least listen to people who lived through the era about why it took time for queer kids to accept themselves.

I seem to have misunderstood- I thought that elections allowed the people to choose who should represent them. I now see that politicians are entitled to have their jobs forever. When they gracefully retire at 90 (or die in office), then we get to “vote” for their chosen successor. Got it!

The unique thing they're doing is "fund public health enough to do its job." Other states are trying to do similar things but at the end of the day, it's the state legislature that gets final say on funding it or not.
