A memo from senior insurance-industry officials warning that insurance modelers are being pressured to downplay climate in their models & that many insurers are already planning their exist from key markets. An explosive fuckup on the scale of the mortgage crisis is building.

When I was in college (very red town, very blue school) local Republicans had the polling place on campus shut down and then when the school set up transit to take students to the next closest one, the College Republicans set up shop at the pickup points to try to intimidate people

Let me make a sort of orthogonal point: I don’t get the attacks on immigrants - that even I’ve experienced - that sound like “you came here from a bad place.” Yeah man I know. That was the whole idea of coming here. To come to a good place where you can make something of your life in freedom.

I am always pretty leery of the idea that marginalized people have a responsibility to handle disputes "within the community" to avoid making their group look bad, because that is traditionally how a LOT of abuse gets justified and covered-up.

Or qualify it with "I don't mean all transplants, just ones who [do thing that makes city worse]" when the people who make the city worse by opposing housing, bike lanes, infill, etc. are almost always longtime residents who think owning a house gives them the sole right to dictate the city's future

I'm one of these immigrants. 10 yrs here, arrived at 18, PhD from a top uni. This rightly highlights the economic impact but on a human level, this is my home. I would be a stranger & outcast in the country I left. F1/OPT gave me a life I thought impossible. In return I make therapeutics.

It is very sad and I agree. Ds can be moved on trans rights, Rs can't. It's that simple. This is why I find trans groups hard to be around & do my rl organizing with other groups. The death cult stuff is both mentally unhealthy and politically unproductive

I suspect a lot of trans people here have essentially a death cult mentality where they think everything is hopeless/they will be imminently killed anyway so what's the use in mitigating damage by voting Dem (saying this as a trans guy).

I think what most progressives today take away from ACT UP is that radicalism works, but a big reason it worked for them was that it was paired with policy & willingness to work with the enemy if they thought it would benefit them

ImmunogoblinG2a @immunogobling2a.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
The second layer of the ACT UP story is that they were radical but also did "boring" policy work which was instrumental in shaping govt response & accelerating drug development, just as much as the radical protests. They called it inside/outside. The eventual fracture was over which to prioritize

The protest at St. Patrick's Cathedral where they desecrated hosts was supposed to be a silent protest until people went off script. The women's coalition tried to get an AZT clinical trial for pregnant women shut down. They had a proto-Twitter anon newsletter they used to trash talk each other!

Like ACT UP didn't form until 6 years into the crisis and it split 4 years in from bitter infighting over whether to prioritize wonky treatment/science approaches & working with the govt vs. larger movement building. The former group were called sellouts, the latter wreckers

IMO our perception of message discipline of past movements is also clouded by hindsight. The AIDS movement was successful so we backfill that history as an uncomplicated united moment for queer people. In reality that movement had the same kinds of bitter infighting we see now

Convincing young people that America is poor & no one can afford anything & everyone is living paycheck to paycheck & their economic future is doomed ... IS NOT GOING TO LEAD TO MORE PROGRESSIVE POLICY. People who feel anxious & under threat do not respond with openness & generosity! Look it up!

Yeah like there are certainly people who make so little that I would expect this but I'm skeptical of the # that are truly paycheck to paycheck like this when so many people define it as "I have no money after savings, retirement, restaurants, etc". That's just having a budget.

Driving a car is incredibly dangerous, it should be one of the most regulated experiences on earth, and it is very upsetting to watch people who correctly don’t trust the cops turn against automated enforcement because the alternative is relying on a cop’s judgement to enforce the laws.

This occasionally causes awkward situations irl. Someone once asked if I was a nepo baby because I live in a nice apt building (carefully budgeted for). I was surprised so blurted out, no and I don't really talk to my parents anymore and it's me sending them money.

It's funny when people claim 70k (or 80 or 100) is "barely enough to get by" in a HCOL city and anyone who says otherwise must be subsidized by mommy & daddy. The fact they believe this IS ITSELF A SIGN OF ECONOMIC PRIVILEGE.

This gets misread as "you think poor people can't have nice things". I don't think that but let's not pretend there is no relationship between people's spending habits & their economic situation.

People will say the increased spending on restaurants doesn't mean people are struggling when, e.g. education & housing cost so much. But the fact it's even possible for people who aren't wealthy to afford these luxuries is a sign of how unimaginably rich this country is.

This is how you end up with people whose view is essentially, we need the revolution so I can have more stuff. The ultrarich get to overconsume so why can't I?

ImmunogoblinG2a @immunogobling2a.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I grew up in a developing country & the overconsumption, even from non-wealthy people, shocked me. At least back then (10 yrs ago) they didn't pretend it was leftist. I think a lot of people believe they're sincere in their leftism but it gets filtered through their ultraconsumerist factory settings

I think we're learning: -consumerism is an overpowering populist force in American society -the populism expresses itself as a base urge for greater consumption; it is not reactive to conditions on the ground -people are ashamed of this and often try to disguise it as other types of politics

EB1 is the outstanding professor/researcher category, i.e. the one for "good" immigrants that the RW claims to have no problem with. 17 years. Yet in their minds, the process is trivial.

I came to the US in 2016 for college, got my PhD right after, am now applying for an employer-sponsored EB1 green card. ~2 years to approval for that, then 5 from green card to citizenship. So at minimum 17 years living here to become a citizen via one of the "easier" pathways.

Our light rail has transit security checking fares (more often than I've seen anywhere else) and booting off disruptive people. They're not armed, don't make arrests, and often just make fare evaders get off at the next stop without fines. But just having them there makes people behave

The idea that the wealthy, the middle class, and the poor are all in completely separate housing markets with no overlap ignores how things work in the real world. In the absence of new high end housing, wealthy people outbid the middle class for the best available existing housing and renovate it.

To be clear, there are too many programs that DO pay like shit (or not at all). Ours wasn't one of them. But people seemed unable to distinguish between the actual reality they were experiencing and the general idea that lots of grad students are poor, and so decided they must be too.

ImmunogoblinG2a @immunogobling2a.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
Saw lots of this in grad school. Our ~$40k/year stipend wasn't lavish but it was enough to live on and one of the most generous nationally. Other grad students called it "poverty wages". Their spending habits didn't reflect this. But culturally pretending to be poor in grad school is what you did.

Evan Mast has several papers related to this. New market rate housing *slows* rent increases in poor neighborhoods and creates a moving chain that allows people to move up into progressively better housing/neighborhoods. Seems like a win for all

We've done a mix of screening from AI-predicted binders and from immunized animals. So far letting nature do the work has been far superior. But it's also much more expensive, so even a moderate advance in sequence/structure prediction would be a big deal & democratizing for labs w/ less funding

I'm a neuroscientist and do early stage biologics dev and this has been my experience. AI predicts 100 possible antibodies against a given target but a human still has to screen. In vitro screens can be quick but then you gotta do mouse studies which can take months depending on the disease
