Getting mad at Joyce Cato Oates for being a snob after cheering all her epic burns is a different form of being a member of the Leopards Eating Faces party. You can’t contain that heat, you can only hope to avoid its gaze.

I've long since learned that as a defense attorney the best way to interact with discussions of alleged sexual assault on social media is to simply not read anything and engage as little as possible.

That's where I've been for a while. We can't even reach questions about the death penalty itself because we fail essential predicates such as "fair and consistent criminal justice system" and "reliable death penalty verdicts that leave no reasonable doubt" and, as shown tonight, "humane execution."

Recently, I did a wonderful interview with the indefatigable @emilystjams.bsky.social about trans people's online information environment and why there are very strong incentives to spread panic. It was a wide-ranging discussion that I think is more relevant than ever.

I don't believe that every trans person in America should immediately be made aware of every single evil bill introduced by some podunk state rep in a random red state they don't live in I don't think that's healthy. I have always needed to see a likelihood of advancement before I would write it up

There’s a pretty common trope in fantasy about children being receptive to magic and losing the ability as they grow older and while I’ve always accepted it I’ve never really been nailed to the wall by it until just now when thinking about A WRINKLE IN TIME.

The idea that political messaging needs to incorporate a narrative of community is not unclear or wishy-washy, and the success of the no kings protests are due in no small part to the fact that it taps into centuries of American mythology.

Just as the Odyssey is an ancient legend about getting lost as a divine punishment, there is also a rich history of literature about people seeking the disorientation and isolation of getting lost and having to find themselves/their way in a new locale. We contain multitudes, and always have.

I hate the "open floor plan" that everyone is obsessed with in houses now. I want nooks and crannies and bizarre floor plans. I don't need to be able to see what someone is doing on the other side of the house. I want places to hide and lurk and dwell in the shadows. I am the beast who awaits in the labyrinth

Actually, the only thing that will save us is making it untenable to be a horrible crank. We should be dunking, and dunking hard, on cranks in our community. Cranks poison out ability to thrive and people need to learn how to spot them, and eject them.

So what you're proposing isn't a change due to covid but a complete overhaul of society in which everyone masks up eternally until all disease is conquered.

I feel compelled to add that the reason I am including the ongoing philosophy of mind fracas in the "pointless" category is because all the promoters are taking as given that physicalism is true, that functionalism is true, and that an AI capable of thought (arguendo) poses no ethical issues.

Messing with the free version of Claude to see its capabilities really drives home the pointlessness 99% of the arguments about AI on this website. I have no doubt that a person who has set up a complex harness could get it to answer my question. But the chatbot struggles.

One of the very convenient parts of being a Christian is that I don’t have to pretend I don’t believe in “magic” souls. Unfortunately I do have to care about when AI becomes ensouled and what that means for the soteriology of silicon. ⚓️

The Ford app just added AI. This is the greatest thing ever.
Ford app AI prompt, with the user-entered text "Write a 150-word story about Sailor Moon and Hatsune Miku kissing."Under the gentle glow of a moonlit Tokyo skyline, Usagi Tsukino stood atop a quiet rooftop terrace, the night breeze catching her golden twin tails. Beside her, Hatsune Miku adjusted her glowing teal ribbons, a soft electronic melody humming faintly from the synth display at her wrist. The vibrant city buzzed far below, but above the streets, the air was peaceful and still.
Turning toward each other, Usagi smiled warmly, her bright eyes reflecting the starlight. Miku stepped closer, her digital glow softly illuminating the space between them. Without a word, Usagi leaned in, and their lips met in a sweet, tender kiss that seemed to bridge magic and music into…one perfect harmony. As they pulled back, blushing beneath the moonlight, Miku shared a soft, cheerful smile.
Now that the magic and music are in harmony, is there anything I can help you with regarding your Mustang Mach-E
