Statistical support for sexual dimorphism in Confuciusornis: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... 🪶
Skeletal diagrams of inferred male (in red) and female (in blue) individuals of the bird-like dinosaur Confuciusornis, with body outlines showing a pair of elongated tail feathers in the male. Graphs to the right indicate variation in body size of the different sexes and how the size dimorphism in Confuciusornis falls within the range of that observed in modern birds.

Me: Smartass Oviraptor The dinosaur: As is often the case, the artist has committed the common error of mislabeling me as an 'Oviraptor' despite the fact that I am clearly a Citipati based off of my head-crest. Now if you excuse me, I have important affairs to attend to.

results of today's #Paleostream !!! Today we drew Koolasuchus (mine is juvenile), Jormungandr, Prionosuchus, and Hesperotestudo
A juvenile Koolasuchus opens its mouth in the water columnA Jormungandr gets struck by lightning while a large asteroid heads towards Earth, this is in reference to the story that when Jörmungandr lets go of his tail, Ragnarök begins, he and Thor battle it out, taking each other out in the processA Prionosuchus chills in the shallows of a lake, Baiera sp. leaves can be seen in the foregroundA Hesperotestudo cools down in some nice mud

For #FossilFriday, a lovely & intricate trace fossil named Hillichnus in the Carmelo Formation (~60 mya) exposed in Point Lobos State Natural Reserve near Monterey CA. It is the feeding burrow of a deep-sea clam that connected its inhalant siphon to the seafloor surface as it burrowed. #ichnology

The last of these Enantiornithes I managed to do before commissions ate my free time, haha. This is Cuspirostrisornis houi, a sparrow-sized Cretaceous bird from the Jiufotang Formation (part of the famous Jehol Biota). The tail here is speculative but similar to other (related?) Enantiornithes. 🎨🐡🦉🧪
Cuspirostrisornis, an Enantiornithine bird from cretaceous China, sits perched on a branch in the sunlight amid ginkgo and araucaria pines. It has a small yellow snout, black mask, orange back, white belly, and two long iridescent blue tail feathers.
