September 2026 finishes with 11 days having a moose sighting after encountering this cow and her calves this morning. Pretty remarkable considering I was out of state on 13 of the days this month.

One more of the colors on today's bike ride. 🍁💙🚲
The dark green leaves of a tree hang over the path in the foreground, but in the background are trees with bright red and orange leaves. The path curves to the left. Cloudy sky above.

Something anecdotal that makes me think the recent museum closures we’re seeing is a symptom of a wider cultural attitude towards science: Two of the most frequent questions I now get from kids on field trips are “what’s that fossil worth”/“do you make a lot of money?”

The abundance of colors everywhere fills me with great joy. 💙🚲
Reds, oranges and one spot of yellow on trees across the field. A spot of blue sky peeks out through dramatic clouds above.

I also recognize that professional organizations can't comment on everything, and strongly worded statements are just that, but also it matters to this AAM member to know that *our* organization is paying attention.

Earlier this morning, I sent an email to the Advocacy & Government Affairs team at AAM, requesting them to take *some* form of action. I think AAM does a good job on many things, but the apparent silence around two *major* closures is a bit disconcerting.

I am pretty disappointed by the lack of public acknowledgment from the American Alliance of Museums about the situations at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel (which was AAM-accredited!) & the Sternberg. There are lots of museum crises right now, but these are particularly serious.

A bit magical, biking while golden leaves fall and float gently all around you. 💙🚲
Short wooden fence on either side of a dirt path. The trees on eithehr side are full of green and yellow leaves (a tinge of orange here and there). Fallen leaves litter the ground.A view of the bike path with lots of fallen golden leaves, but the trees are still largely green.

This also suggests that older evidence for crown tetrapods, including recently described Devonian trackways bearing claw-like tracks, be reinterpreted. The tracemaker of these trackways may have been an animal like Westlothiana - a quadrupedal, pentadactyl, and clawed stem tetrapod!

Out today: We show that Westlothiana lizziae or "Lizzie," described 35 years ago as the world's oldest reptile - is not a stem amniote at all, but a stem tetrapod. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Illustration of a Standard-winged Nightjar doing a display flight in front of a big beautiful glowing full moon. The nightjar, a mottled gray/brown/white bird, has long pointed wingtips, a short stubby beak, and a big black eye. It is flying with wings bent low in an upside-down U shape while wiggling its strange "standards" - elongated huge shiny black primaries that bend upward from the wings and look like black pointed flags.

We knew this was coming: Republican AGs have been in a race to get shield laws in front of SCOTUS. The suits also rely on anti-abortion strategies I’ve been tracking for years—including lies about coercion, bogus studies on mifepristone’s safety, free speech attacks, and fetal personhood.

The Supreme Court’s majority gave no reason for its literal life-and-death decision to wipe out an appeals court order issued earlier today and which was, on its face, intended to be temporary in nature. Sotomayor wrote tonight’s dissent. Order and dissent: www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...
The Court's decision to vacate that stay interferes with the Sixth Circuit's routine administrative handling of a capital case and unnecessarily prevents that court from giving due consideration to Pike's claim. Worse, the Court grants such extraordinary relief solely to allow the State to execute Pike before litigation over her conviction has properly run its course in the lower courts. I see no reason to short-circuit the ordinary process of appellate review, particularly in light of the grave consequences of an erroneous de-cision. Tennessee's desire to expedite Pike's execution by a few days or even weeks cannot outweigh her "fundamentalinterest in [her] own life." Tennessee v. Garner, 471 U. S. 1,
9 (1985).
In capital cases, "[a]ppreciation of our own fallibility, and respect for the judgment of an appellate tribunal," demand caution before "acting irretrievably." Bowersox v. Williams,
517 U. S. 345, 347 (1996) (Ginsburg, J., dissenting). Indeed, this Court often states that it is "'a court of review, not of first view?" McLane Co. v. EEOC, 581 U.S. 72, 85 (2017) (quoting Cutter v. Wilkinson, 544 U.S. 709, 718, n. 7
(2005)). Today, the Court, as it has too often lately, chooses to overlook that principle precisely when it matters most.

For #TyrannosaurTuesday, here's @ohiouniversity.bsky.social sophomore researcher Klazina McKeigan digging into the details of T. rex skulls using the brilliant 1/6-scale 3D print set of Stan from the Black Hills Institute. Klazina is training for a new project that you'll hear more about later! 🦖
Klazina McKeigan, a sophomore in Biological Sciences, is in the highly competitive Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine Early Assurance Program, meaning that she's already been accepted to our medical school (where I'm also faculty)! Here, Klazina is working with the one-sixth scale 3D printed of the T. rex known as Stan (NHMAD 2020.00001). Klazina holds the assembled T. rex skull in one hand as she positions the isolated bones in a sandbox with the other. The palatal skeleton is a challenge for just about all of us, but this disarticulated set, along with a sandbox, allows Klazina to really see how the bones fit together. Here's the full set of the one-sixth scale 3D prints of the articulated and disarticulated skull bones of the T. rex known as Stan (NHMAD 2020.00001) produced by the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research. It's tremendously useful as a mean of learning how T. rex skulls are put together!

It feels like we do not yet have an intersectional feminist movement that has coalesced to meet the needs of this moment. I can't think of a better reason for cross-generational solidarity than the fact that we need experience AND energy at the table. We need perspective AND time and resources.

For a second-wave movement that built itself around consciousness-raising, Take Back the Night, and other *community based* work, this is disappointing. I get it, it's hard to see so much backsliding. But we need cross-generational solidarity right now, badly.

Port Kennedy Cave is filled with fossils from the mid-Pleistocene (ca. 1.5 ma to 250ka). There aren't many of these sites, especially in the eastern US. So it is an important record, even for animals that are common during other time periods. Like mastodons!
