Today's four random pieces of palaeoart: Bernard Long's Moeritherium, Peter Zallinger's Brontosaurus, @himarudolf.bsky.social's Carboniferous forest, and @dragonsofwales.bsky.social's Pteranodon!
A grey, bare-skinned ungulate with a tapir-like build and rounded, tusked face emerges onto a sandy shore, backed by a crescent moon and starry sky.Two stiff-limbed, almost statue-like sauropods in an orange-tinted evening scene. One stands beside a lake, tail dragging along the ground. In the foreground, cutting across the image, is the neck and head of another Brontosaurus, mouth gaping slightly as if reaching for some unseen leafy morsel. Scattered palms and a thick layer of ferns decorate the shore, while horsetails poke above the waters of the lake.A lush tangle of impressionistic greenery painted with square, blocky, almost pixelated brushstrokes surrounding a still pond. The great trunks of primitive trees stretch out of sight. Amid the understory of horsetails and ferns, the curling tail of a huge blue-grey scorpion arches menacingly. Portrait of a Pteranodon with a long, sweeping, subtly upturned beak and stubby yellow-tinted crest. Its movement throws an arc of water above its leathery black head, while the bare skin of its voluminous neck stretch and fold. The face is covered in a complex blend of bare, bird-like skin and keratinous sheathes, giving it a strangely familiar visage.

Bambiraptor feinbergi. Possibly a valid genus… possibly a juvenile Saurornitholestes. Possibly none of the above. I spent far too long on this one. I hope it was worth it 🫠 If the scientists could avoid reclassifying Bambi before people have seen this, I’d appreciate it. 😉 #SciArt

Hey palaeoartists: do you want to attract the attention of the worst (and I mean THE . WORST) people on Facebook? Draw some extinct hominids and watch the racists and young-Earth-creationists (an interestingly circular Venn diagram) come flocking like moths to a flame. Exhausting and nauseating.

A portrait of Homo rudolfensis: an extinct species of archaic human from about 2 million years ago. The classification and validity of rudolfensis remains a matter of debate, with some arguing it may actually have been an Australopithecine, or even synonymous with H.habilis. No AI used, obviously.

I’ve just learned that Dracorex hogwartsia is no longer a valid dinosaur (just a juvenile Pachycephalosaurus). I’m not normally happy to “lose” a dinosaur, but it does mean that at least the stain of Rowling has been expunged from palaeontology. Small victories, etc…

Handy woman. Portrait of a female Homo habilis - a human ancestor from around 2.4 million years ago. Homo habilis means “handy man” (they were prolific makers of stone tools). This elderly female clutches a stone tool to her chest: a treasured possession, or a reminder of a lost loved one? #SciArt
A digital illustration shows a female Homo habilis. Its heavy-browse face is a mix of both ape and human characteristics, with dark skin and hair. Her gentle eyes gaze into the distance. In her hand is a crude but sharp stone tool, which she is clutching tightly against her chest, suggesting an emotional attachment perhaps.
The illustration was created in Procreate and Photoshop with a combination of photo manipulation and digital painting. No generative AI was used. (I hate having to even say that, but here we are).
