Finally picked up the Schleich Smilodon thanks to a sale, may just be one of their best prehistoric figures EVER Lovely sculpt and pattern, didn't find my Safari one for comparison but I got the Papo one (and some extant big cats from Schleich/Papo) for comparison (not to scale)

Tyrannosaurus rex was named 120 years ago today on 4th October, 1905. I would do things a little differently now, but this drawing is from 2020.
Graphite and brown pencil drawing of the head of a Tyrannosaurus rex, mouth agape, in profile, facing left. The drawing is characterised by intricate linework and texture.

I haven't posted anything for a while, so here's some new #paleoart for #FossilFriday: Cetiosaurus in a Middle Jurassic landscape. I've had to compose and execute this in just two days, so hopefully it looks OK! (All data for the plant recons comes from @palaeojules.bsky.social.) #dinosaur #sciart

I have another #paleobotany restoration guide for this #FossilFriday. This time, it's Kimuriella densifolia, a whole plant bennettitalean from the Late #Jurassic of Japan. This plant is composed of three organ taxa: Williamsonia, Zamites, and Weltrichia. #paleoart #sciart #botany
A portrait page with a full restored branch onto the left. It has 6 palm like leaves at the end of one branch, hiding a cone, with a second mature cone below it. On the top right is a male floral organ, which is start shaped, and in the bottom right is a cut-way of the female cone showing its development.

here's the results of this week's #Paleostream flocking! this week we sketched Waptia, Megapterygius, Eomola, and Talpanas (Kauaʻi mole duck)
a Waptia swims by an underwater ROV, small particulates suspended in the water column are illuminated by the light

Waptia is an extinct crustacean-like arthropod who's fossils are found in the Middle Cambrian aged Burgess Shale of British Columbia, Canada. It looked similar to tadpole shrimp with a bivalved carapace, however, it had a whale-like tail flaps most likely used for swimming in an up and down motiona mother Megapterygius swims with her calf by the surface of the water, the sunny water is filled with plankton looking for a feed

Megapterygius is a mosasaur from the Late Cretaceous Toyajo Formation of Wakayama, Japan. it's most well known for supposedly having evidence for a dorsal fin, though, as there are no consistent osteological correlates for dorsal fins, many have questioned this interpretation, this doesnt negate the possibility of a dorsal fin however. it was a pelagically adapted animal with relatively long flippers compared to other mosasaurs, used for stabilisation while swimming. like other mosasaurs it had a long torso and is typically reconstructed with an incorrectly deep chest.an Eomola is kicked around by the waves at the surface of the water

Eomola is a relative of molas and sits just outside of the family Molidae. it's known from jaw fossils from the Middle Eocene age Kuma Formation in Krasnodar Krai, Russia. we know nothing about how it looked properly, but its unfused premaxillae suggest it had a very different diet to its extant relatives. here i have obscured the posterior portion of its body in the waves and reconstructed the anterior portion of the body similar to the genus Ranzania, known to most as slender molas.at night in a dense forest, a Kauaʻi mole duck pokes through the underbrush searching for food with its great sense of smell and using its sensitive bill and whiskers to feel around. the sudden flash of light stuns it however

the Kauaʻi mole duck (Talpanas lippa) is an extinct duck which was likely blind and flightless. its remains were found in Makauwahi Cave, Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi and were dated to around 4050 BCE. it wouldve looked like a short and fat duck with small legs and small eyes, there is evidence for a broad beak, however it was potentially not as long as people usually reconstruct it with. i have given it speculative sensory whiskers similar to a kiwi's.

Never forget that the ʻāina on which the Kauaʻi mole duck's fossils were extracted from is located in the ahupua'a of Māhāʻulepū, in the moku of Kona, on the mokukpuni of Kauaʻi, in the paeʻāina of Hawaiʻi. Queen Liliʻuokalani only yielded the Hawaiian Kingdom to the united states of america to avoid the massacre of her people, sovereignty was never ceded. I would like to acknowledge that Native Hawaiians (Kānaka Maoli) have an ongoing connection with the paeʻāina of Hawaiʻi, and their ʻIke kuʻuna continues to shape western science.

A wandering Stegodon runs into a peafowl (Pavo miejue) couple heading to rest in the trees. Based on a recent paper by Lan et al. (2026) describing a new peafowl species from Pleistocene Taiwan.
The sky is deep blue and bright orange, lined by horizontal files of dark clouds close to the horizon. The creatures on the ground: the forest, a stegodon and two peafowls, all are fading into nearly complete darkness.
