The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

Just got my hard copy of a little summer project that I helped out a bit with: In advance of this Fall's Cambridge Greek Play, Antonia Ruppel organised the creation of a basic student reader of Euripides' Ion using the play's performance text.
Cover with the branding of this year's Cambridge Greek Play (Euripides' Ion)There are two ways to learn how to read ancient literary texts well. One, slowly read short bits of text and  nd all the needed information yourself, with the help of a grammar and a dictionary. Two, read a lot, at much higher speed, with all the needed information already provided in a systematic, easy-to-access way. This Reader aims at letting you do the latter. It presents the text of Euripides’ Ion as performed at the 2026 Cambridge Greek Play. The text on each left-hand page is complemented by three elements on the right: a set of notes that help with syntactic di*culties and o+er stylistic and other relevant background information; a running vocabulary which also identi es forms that perhaps are not straightforwardly recognisable; and a translation that aims at being literal, not literary, and thus at helping you understand how the original text says what it says.
The best teaching materials are those you know well: so do take a moment to  nd the list of abbreviations and the reference vocabulary list (which includes all those words not in the running vocabulary because they are rather frequent – consider memorising those words on the list that you do not know yet). Should you  nd any mistakes or have any other feedback on how to improve this Reader, please do send an email to ion.reader.2026@gmail.com. Thank you! Sincere thanks go to all those who made this project possible by giving signi cant amounts of their time and expertise to each create the commentary, running vocabulary and translation for a passage of the play: Anthony Bowen Patryk Bratuś James Clackson Nicholas Denyer John Gibert Richard Hunter Rebecca Lämmle Krishnan Ram-Prasad Richard Rawles George Robertson Matthew Scarborough Jo Willmott Should this Reader have made you want to know more, take a look at the editions of the Ion
by Gunther Martin (De Gruyter 2018) or John Gibert (Cambridge University Press 2019). Antonia Ruppel, August 2026

The new Harriet Powers USPS postage stamps are so moving. Featuring details from formerly enslaved Powers’s “Pictorial Quilt” of 1898, I’m so glad these stamps will bring her work & life story to more people, especially when so much Black history is being erased from the public realm right now 💌
USPS postage stamp. A detail of one if the story blocks in Harriet Power’s Pictorial quilt. Against a navy cotton background, this block features two abstract human figures appliquéd in cream colored cotton with arms raised, an abstract donkey figure in brown patterned fabric, and two ducks in pale cotton. There are also appliqué flowers and an appliqué sun using circular and triangular pieces of pale fabric. The bottom of the Forever Stamp bears the name HARRIET POWERS in all caps.

From the USPS website:

Four new stamps honor quiltmaker Harriet Powers (1837–1910), a formerly enslaved woman who stitched works that are celebrated as masterpieces of American folk art and storytelling. Just two of her quilts are known to survive.

Born October 29, 1837, on a plantation near Athens, Georgia, the future quilter is believed to have learned to sew as a child. At 18, she married Armstead Powers, an enslaved farmhand. Eventually they would have nine children. After Emancipation, they bought four acres nearby in Sandy Creek, Georgia, where they raised cotton and vegetables.

Along the way, Harriet Powers began creating quilts, and completed at least five. The two we know are referred to as story quilts because each of their panels features a pieced, appliquéd, and embroidered scene from a familiar story drawn from local lore or the Bible.
USPS postage stamp depicting a story blocks from Harriet Powers quilt. On a light brown fabric background, animal figures are secured using the hand stitched appliqué technique. The figures are abstract but appear to depict rabbits, deer, and coyote or perhaps foxes in a variety of natural colors and fabric patterns, from plain cream cotton to brown and white polkadot patterned fabric. The bottom of the Forever Stamp bears the name HARRIET POWERS in all caps. USPS postage stamp depicting a story block from Harriet Powers 1898 quilt. Against a beige cotton background, abstract human and animal appliqué figures, with a rudimentary sun and moon figure in scraps of fabric. USPS postage stamp depicting a story block from Harriet Powers 1898 quilt. Against a navy cloth background, abstract appliqué human figures that appear to be dancing (arms are raised and there’s a sense of movement in how the figures are arranged/placed on the fabric. Above the figures appear to be abstract shooting star symbols in an orangey brown fabric. The bottom of the Forever Stamp bears the name HARRIET POWERS in all caps.

I did not lose my heart in summer's even,
When roses to the moonrise burst apart:
When plumes were under heel and lead was flying,
In blood and smoke and flame I lost my heart.
I lost it to a soldier and a foeman,
A chap that did not kill me, but he tried;
That took the sabre straight and took it striking,
And laughed and kissed his hand to me and died.
