When she accompanied Einstein on his first trip to the United States in 1921 their boat, arriving in New York, was met by crowds of reporters and press photographers. One of them asked Elsa if she understood relativity. 'Oh, no,' she answered with a smile, 'but it is not necessary to my happiness.'

LA CÉRÉMONIE (Claude Chabrol, 1995, rewatch). Late Chabrol masterpiece in which two working class women (a provocative, gleefully amoral postmistress, brilliantly played by Isabelle Huppert, and a secretive maid played by Sandrine Bonnaire) take their revenge on the privileged bourgeoisie. #FilmSky
A colour still from the film showing the two lead actresses sitting next to each other by a bed. They are watching something off camera, which is a tv screen.

"Beyond the blurry line of the perimeter, the reactor's chimney belches voluminous white fumes..All the engineers in the country couldn't repair the damage done. It's something older issuing from the open heart of the earth. It isn't steam, she repeats. 'It's souls,' she says to her mother."

Long flight: lots of dross being watched or semi-watched, in one case an elderly gent has The Mandalorian on his screen while scrolling an apparently endless list of ABBA songs on his iPad. Sigh. Then I notice someone is watching Zodiac and a little karmic balance is restored.

Ok
"I do, for a couple of reasons. When I was in my late teens and early 20s, and starting to write seriously and think about Irish writing, I didn't feel it with Joyce, who I could never really make head nor tail of, to be honest, and I didn't feel it with Seán O'Casey. Those war plays just didn't really do it for me. I felt it with Oscar Wilde."

Jet ski’d with them by water to Deptford, where it of a sudden did lighten, thunder, and rain so as we could do not but stay in the international house of pancakes.

Back from Dallas. Next up is Dublin. This will be an extended version of my Edinburgh show - two 45 mins with an interval. In many ways it will be like a football match. In other ways, it won’t. Either way, I hope to see you there! Tickets here - www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-umbrel...

of a literary bent
Dublin is the administrative capital of a small country with a swollen civil service. It is also a university city twice over. Academics and civil servants are frequently of a literary bent, but they are rarely real writers. Dublin therefore contains some hundreds of uncreative literary men, most of them recruited from the provinces and liberated from provincial backgrounds of varying remoteness. To be able to exchange literary gossip, to be in becomes essential for them.

There’s a strange expectation, esp from some unimaginative critics and dullards, that writers will continue to write the exact same book. Maybe because people won’t ever have to work too hard on either end. This has led us to AI which can meet your expectations. Art will continue its foolish sins
