Horror from David Hayden. 'A shuddering, wordless voice rose in the distance, and another, and another; a chorus, a lament, which ended in a low grunt. There was a coda of sobbing. There was silence?

Nicolas Richard got in touch with me while he was working on his French translation of Pynchon’s Shadow Ticket, and our email exchanges this past Spring were a small joy. He kindly acknowledged me in his notes and sent me a copy. I’m thrilled.
Cover for Nicolas Richard’s French translation of Thomas Pynchon’s SHADOW TICKET. English translation (rough) of acknowledgments in Nicolas Richard’s French translation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel SHADOW TICKET.

Thanks to the Gilbert Musy program of the Translation Center

Literary of Lausanne, led by Irène Weber Enking and Camille Luscher, whom I greet and thank with all my heart, I was able to finish this translation in optimal conditions of calm and concentration at the Château de Lavigny; may Sophie Kandaouroff be warmly thanked here, as well as Maxime Maillard, who has effectively contributed to the visibility of my work. Thank you to my colleagues Sarah Vermande Gurcel and Régis Quatresous who were the first to hear my readings of long passages of Mission de l'ombre.

Several interlocutors of choice were present throughout my translation of Shadow Ticket, and I would like to express my very much gratitude to them: Brian Evenson, Tim Ware, Gary Lippman, Edwin Turner from the Biblioklept site, Steve Weeks, you answered in writing to my too long lists of questions, and all your comments (sometimes divergent!) Have been tremendously precious to me. You guided me in my trial and error, without ever omitting to tell me your doubts and, quite regularly, your perplexity.

Thanks to Benoît Tadié for the brainstorming at the cafe.

I would like to greet Elsa Lagrange of Éditions Bourgois, and thank her for her corrections and rereadings; she has fulfilled her shadow mission with panache.

Chess is hard for humans, but not for computers.
One day, it will be fully solved like checkers.
Between now and then, or even after, have fun.
People enjoy many games/sports where machines are vastly betterThere are more possible chess games, by about 40 orders of magnitude, than atoms in the observable universe. To solve chess, you'd have to map them all. Good luck.

Wrong, all legal chess positions are ~40 oom less than the estimated atoms in the Universe. And ASI will figure out ways to solve and compress that are far beyond what we could possibly comprehend.
