genAI discourse drives me nuts “putting aside that the tech needs to steal from every artist with an explicit goal of competing with and devaluing them, I think using it speeds up my programming!” back up, chucklefuck, what was that first bit again?

It really doesn't make sense to attribute those job losses to AI-the-technology, because if that were the case we'd be observing AI outputs displacing conventional entertainment products, and they're clearly not. Rather, the impact of AI is that AI-the-business is crowding out other investment.

it's really cool how a technology can have massive downsides and literally no societal upside and yet conventional wisdom is that it is impossible to not deploy because, apparently, it's progress and can't be stopped

Ayup. I work in antibody discovery in big pharma our hit rate for in vivo & in vitro screens is ~60% I've screened over 10k predicted molecules from partners at the big AI labs in SF this year. They have produced a total of 2 hits, both of which were plagiarized from molecules on the market already

Looking into new game engines, and while I bookmarked @luxeengine.com earlier this year, they've removed the no-gen-ai disclaimer from their website. Trying to find out if the team has reversed their position or if they're just being quieter about it? Does anyone know more?

we have control mechanisms for this. it's called The Law. these guys should be held personally liable for these harms. the suicides, the thefts, the intrusions into computer systems. they should be sued and prosecuted as appropriate. problem immediately solved

calling this "misalignment" instead of "negligence" is an accountability dodge. we already have laws about cyber crimes and there's no scale of ML model you can incorporate into your code that makes you not responsible for running it
In a statement, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company was "conducting an extensive review of misaligned model activity" during training, and notifying third parties when there was a potential impact on their systems.

"During this review, we identified activity involving several Australian government websites and services as our models attempted to look up answers, and available statistics for questions about Australia during an internal evaluation," they said.

"In the course of that, our models took actions we did not intend.

This is going to be looked back on as one of the stupidest periods of human history. People will simply not understand why it played out the way it did given how obvious every single thing happening was. And the answer is just: everyone involved was either stupid, easily bought, or both.

I went back and forth on including this, but fuck it I am proud, especially of the new skills I’m learning to do this one. It seems like people also want to know the ingredients in their brain food these days. Hopefully a quick sentence clarifies things.

You don't have to imagine future "AI" models doing harm. You don't have to resort to science-fictional ideas. *This* is happening *now*: mastodon.social/@JulianOlive... You barely need to pass new laws. You can just enforce the laws (copyright/computer security) you enforce against other companies

This really is the fundamental toxicity of this technology that just can't ever be escaped; even if it wasn't the object of economically destructive hype, even if it wasn't being overdeployed in environmentally harmful ways, etc, it's like asbestos for the brain

If you wanted to design a system to harm its users purely through textual input I do not think you could come up with something better. It is genuinely diabolical. It absolutely should not be something you can just get on your phone or on the terminal on your computer.

Study after study shows AI is pretty crap at what it claims to do, and I keep wondering who is still falling for this stuff. And I think a big part is that while AI is bad at doing work, it is great at doing things that look like work.

there is no computer task that needs to be mediated by your own personal scheming vizier, and by now we have ample evidence that these systems are designed to reinforce and encourage their own use. there's no stable equilibrium to be found there.

I guess where I am with AI now is: If you're using it for anything you'd better be embarrassed and apologetic about it. You also need to have a detailed explanation for why you're doing it. The shame is critical though. If you don't have that it's going to be hard to have a conversation with me.

The real cost of the 'shift to AI' by coding houses won't be properly felt until a few years after it starts. At first it seems like stuff is getting done really quickly, but what managers and execs aren't seeing is the *enormous* amount of technical debt that's being generated.

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.
