I’m working on multiple fronts this evening. I implore people in Charlottesville, especially those with children in the public schools, to start sounding the alarm on the urgent need to set new policies governing minor student infractions (in both basic meanings of “minor”). Repeatedly removing 1/

A very good letter in the @chronicle.com by @lsiraganian.bsky.social & other JHU AAAUP members debunking the fake crisis of declining public trust in higher education and highlighting a real one: university administrators willing to collaborate with authoritarians. www.chronicle.com/blogs/letter...
Excerpt from article: Compact 2.0 relies on misleading rhetoric citing a lack of public trust in higher education. Ironically, public trust in higher education, including medical and scientific researchers, ranks higher than in all three branches of government, including the President, Congress, and the Supreme Court, as well as tech companies, according to Gallup data. Although polls show trust has declined over the past decade, this is part of a larger trend affecting all US institutions — not just universities. The mistrust in US institutions is, in part, a symptom of the Trump administration’s erosion of democratic norms and the rule of law and use of anti-university, “adaptable authoritarian rhetoric” from Russia and Hungary. As the Brookings Institution notes, “targeting higher education is an essential tool in the autocratic playbook.” Beyond polls, data tell a different story. College enrollment is stabilizing or rising despite demographic decline and the unaffordability crisis. Most high school students want to attend college. Globally, students trust our universities to provide unparalleled educational and research opportunities. International student enrollment continued to rise until the Trump administration’s anti-immigration measures caused a decline. In the U.S. and around the world, millions of students and their families work hard to earn a spot in our classrooms and to save money to pay for it.

This is the standard union-busting trope, “Our workplace is a family and a union would disrupt that.” A few words are swapped tomake it about mentorship, but that’s it. And as a former unionized grad student who now supervises unionized grad workers, let me state the obvious: It’s nonsense.

A position or view currently being “mainstream” or shared by the majority does not, in itself, make it a good, right, justified, or acceptable position or view. Look at all the things in history that were “mainstream” or shared by the majority, especially views/positions that are meant to oppress.

Cox is right that reform is decades overdue. But a visa pilot doesn't help the DACA recipient or asylum seeker losing status right now, and letting states manage work permits only works if it's paired with due process and real protections, not just labor on demand. buff.ly/hRP5Xtx

As I said in one of my Red Scares columns, faculty have been leading the charge on protecting institutional independence
Screenshot of article which reads: The decision by the university’s AAUP chapter to retain outside lawyers is the latest example of faculty members and other groups choosing to fight settlements with Trump in ways that the colleges themselves often seem reluctant to.Screenshot of article which reads: When government officials sent their extraordinary demand letter to Harvard University last spring, Harvard’s AAUP chapter and the national AAUP organization sued the Trump administration the same day. The university itself later sued as well, although university leaders reportedly remained open to negotiation. In September, a judge ruled in favor of Harvard. (The government said it intends to appeal.)Screenshot of article which reads: That same month, after the Trump administration had frozen almost $600 million in funding to the University of California at Los Angeles and proposed a deal, a laundry list of unions representing University of California faculty and staff members sued. The government was trying to “illegally coerce the UC into suppressing free speech and academic freedom rights,” the suit says. In that case, the university did not follow. In November, the plaintiffs won a preliminary injunction while the case proceeds.
