A very good letter in the @chronicle.com by @lsiraganian.bsky.social & other JHU AAAUP members debunking the fake crisis of declining public trust in higher education and highlighting a real one: university administrators willing to collaborate with authoritarians. www.chronicle.com/blogs/letter...
Excerpt from article: Compact 2.0 relies on misleading rhetoric citing a lack of public trust in higher education. Ironically, public trust in higher education, including medical and scientific researchers, ranks higher than in all three branches of government, including the President, Congress, and the Supreme Court, as well as tech companies, according to Gallup data. Although polls show trust has declined over the past decade, this is part of a larger trend affecting all US institutions — not just universities. The mistrust in US institutions is, in part, a symptom of the Trump administration’s erosion of democratic norms and the rule of law and use of anti-university, “adaptable authoritarian rhetoric” from Russia and Hungary. As the Brookings Institution notes, “targeting higher education is an essential tool in the autocratic playbook.” Beyond polls, data tell a different story. College enrollment is stabilizing or rising despite demographic decline and the unaffordability crisis. Most high school students want to attend college. Globally, students trust our universities to provide unparalleled educational and research opportunities. International student enrollment continued to rise until the Trump administration’s anti-immigration measures caused a decline. In the U.S. and around the world, millions of students and their families work hard to earn a spot in our classrooms and to save money to pay for it.

My impression is that Johns Hopkins has offset a loss of federal grants by effectively treating the American Enterprise Institute as a primary donor. They’re free to do so, and then others are free to ask if portions of JHU are becoming extensions of AEI instead of independent scholarly programs.

I argue that we should evaluate scholarly merit w/out considering personal poltical views. But if that’s the question, then the dominant trend in the past decade has been a massive effort to promote conservative scholars in academia over any other group. We should insist on that clear fact.

Johns Hopkins has been asking potential candidates (or having search firms ask potential candidates) whether they can be "objective" and whether they will meet with Republicans or not. It's not quite political litmus test for hiring, but it sure is something several of us have noted.

Viewpoint diversity is the opposite of peer review. You should not be leading a university if you don’t believe in peer review asheeshksi.substack.com/p/producing-...
The fact that conservative scholarship is underrepresented in our institutions ultimately means that the left gets flabbier because it’s not being tested and challenged in the way it ought to be. At the same time, the right, to the extent that it moves outside the university and finds itself in think tanks and is not subject to challenges or critiques from the center and the left, becomes more radicalized. This is not just a problem for our institutions. It’s a problem for America. So I do feel urgency in trying to remedy this issue. It was my colleague Steve Teles, who wrote in The Chronicle about this, who said he was hard pressed to identify a single tenured conservative scholar in the social sciences and humanities at Hopkins. I took that as a very serious critique

there is no rhyme or reason to an entire “AI” department, much less an AI school. There is no curriculum, as such, because AI is not a school of thought. It has no theory, no method. It’s just a tool. Two or three courses, max, if someone is obsessed with it should suffice.

A few hot takes on the letter, which I will refer to as Compact 2.0: 0) I appreciate the shift from outright extortion to (theoretically) open-ended questions. 1) Nevertheless, both the framing of the questions and wording of several rest on a thin evidence base and unexamined assumptions.
