Jose Andres is the absolute GOAT. turbolib who has brought meals to disaster zones after the Haiti earthquake & to war-stricken families in Ukraine and Gaza and now he’s YIMBYposting in the face of Spain’s severe housing shortage

Incredible to see the "experts" on resolving the housing emergency that Spain is experiencing! On every television! @telediario_tve @ANoticias
@tele5_noticias @noticias_cuatro The reality is that we have politicians who try to create decrees and solutions when they lack the preparation or knowledge to devise a real solution to the problem we're facing.
Spain doesn't have a problem of a lack of decrees. It has a problem of a lack of housing.
And as long as the Government keeps confusing announcing measures with solving problems, we'll keep paying the consequences of its inaction.
Subsidizing demand without increasing supply pressures prices. Regulating a market more and more without building new housing doesn't eliminate scarcity: it manages it. Taxing a type of rental can change incentives, but it doesn't lay a single brick either.Because housing doesn't get cheaper by distributing scarcity. It gets cheaper by ending it.
Spain needs to build. A lot.
More available land. Permits in months, not years. More density wherever possible. Legal certainty. Much more public housing and also private housing.
But the Government isn't doing what's necessary. It prefers to intervene on the few homes that exist rather than create the conditions for there to be many more. It prefers to present patches as solutions and load the cost of its failure onto owners, developers, and citizens.
The rest can serve to redistribute, protect certain groups, or change incentives. But let's not confuse that with solving the underlying problem.
You don't fix a lack of housing by better distributing the few homes that exist. You fix it by making many more exist.
Less propaganda. Less patches. Less obsession with intervening on the same apartment.
More supply. More construction. More homes.

no that’s a different issue - that portion of Oakland is labeled as Berkeley by the post office. It’s dumb but nobody that lives there is confused. and regardless even if their home were in Berkeley, you still can’t use your office in another part of Berkeley as your voting address.

Pope Leo XIV
@Pontifex

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.2016: I will never fight a holy war

2019: Pope Leo I am ready launch me towards the nearest data centersome AI guy saying he makes christian children's books with AI asking the pope if that is ok then and someone posting a meme react with the pope holding a baseball bat saying 'did I stutter'

Trump hugely cut federal subsidies to our state's medical care. Prop 40 temporarily, badly plugs those holes. Everyone arguing that it's an imperfect fix, that it fails "good government" tests, pretending there's another solution in the wings, other than "people lose coverage and die." There isn't.

jaw dropped when I read this www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/w...
But for many Brazilians, the most pressing issue as they prepare to vote on Sunday is a crisis much closer to home: crushing personal debt.
More than 80 percent of Brazilian families are in debt, a historic high for the country, according to the National Confederation of Commerce, a retail group.
Brazil also has the highest benchmark interest rate among 40 major economies, and families spend nearly 30 percent of their income on debt payments, according to Brazil’s central bank. In the United States, that figure is about 11 percent.
Unlike in the United States, where most household debt is driven by mortgages, in Brazil debt is fueled by credit cards, payroll loans and retail store installment plans carrying among the highest interest rates in the world.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a leftist who is locked in a tight race against a right-wing opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, has seized on this concern in the closing days of the campaign. On Friday, Mr. Lula signed an order banning online gambling, which was legalized in 2018 and has supercharged the household debt crisis.
Brazil is the first country, experts say, to ban online gambling after introducing and regulating the industry.

well, sure. but beyond that, having it be an active discussion actively undermines the real need for serious reform.

I know that some people will now put me on a list saying I’m a “liberal”, and to some degree, guilty as charged. I believe that policing is flawed, in need of reform, and never to be perfected - but ultimately necessary & very viable to improve. And phrases like ACAB are unhelpful in that light.

Hyperlexic @hyperlexic.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Policing was definitely not the sole or maybe even primary cause in the dramatic drops shown in the chart below - but nearly every life saved here was a working class person, usually black or brown.

Obviously there are deep flaws in the WAY policing is conducted in much of the country, but to me the answer is deep reform not abolishment.
