This doesn’t feel like good news for school funding… …good for our students obviously, but makes the case for increasing funding harder..?

I miss the old days when a disgruntled noble in a dispute with the crown would just spent a few years sulking in the Low Countries before landing at a fishing village in the south west with some Flemish mercenaries and heading for the Welsh Marches to raise his banner. Much more dignified.

A Philadelphia nun named Sister Rose Kuhn drives to a Texas immigration court weekly to sit next to unaccompanied children as young as 4 who are facing deportation hearings alone without relatives or an attorney so that they won’t have to face the judge by themselves. Heartbreaking and horrific.

I simply do not understand what's going on in Labour that renders its leaders incapable of finding a TV camera and speaking out against street violence. Even if you assume they agree about immigration, violence is wrong, unpopular AND against the interests of any even vaguely left wing govt.

One reason I'm so opposed to early selection is it means the sorting process is essentially done in advance by teachers/parents and so kids aren't even given a chance on the route that leads to the high status and well paid jobs.

The interesting thing about school closures during covid (agree with them or not) is they had much less impact on long-term academic outcomes than people expected (me included). But much more long-term impact on mental health and attendance.

An oil painting titled "Sparkly Seas, Kynance in oils" by the artist Jenny Aitken.
A coastal scene featuring vibrant green cliffs alongside deep blue water with prominent white paint strokes representing sunlight reflecting off the waves. The painting is a demonstration piece showcasing techniques for capturing light on water, likely painted in a painterly style.

Reform have now lost six by-elections in a row in England, Scotland and Wales. Their national poll rating is 26% – below Labour in 1983 – and Farage’s approval rating is -37. They’re very far from the voice of the people and need to stop being treated as such.

A cropped screenshot of an article section titled "Gary Larson cartoon incident" from a Tumblr page. The text describes a controversy involving a Far Side cartoon and Jane Goodall.

_____________

Gary Larson cartoon incident

_____________

In 1987 Gary Larson published a Far Side cartoon of two chimpanzees grooming, in which one discovers a blonde hair and says, "Conducting a little more 'research' with that Jane Goodall tramp?"[127] The Jane Goodall Institute called the cartoon an "atrocity" in a letter drafted by its lawyers to Larson and his syndicate. Goodall, who was in Africa at the time, later found the cartoon amusing.[128]

She went on to name it her favourite depiction of herself in pop culture.[129] Larson offered profits from sales of a shirt featuring the cartoon to the Jane Goodall Institute.[130]

Goodall wrote the preface to The Far Side Gallery 5, detailing her version of the controversy.[131] She praised Larson's creative ideas, which often compare and contrast the behaviour of humans and animals.

In 1988 Larson visited Goodall's research facility in Tanzania.[128] While there, he was attacked by a chimpanzee named Frodo.[127][132]

Ditto- clearly they haven’t tried to get a whole dept to teach the same thing, let alone a country… teachers gunna be teachers on this one. Interesting to see if they mandate NC for academies. Or if Labour making everyone an academy leaves them without the ability to enforce an NC. But exam specs…
