Ironic really. You and Yours emerged from Tony Whitby's rationalisation of 1970, and passes with another one. Very sorry to see Thinking Allowed and Free Thinking go, particularly the latter so soon after it was cast out from Radio 3.

Parts of the BBC-Speak statement are surreal: "...reshaping BBC speech audio" in order to "build a strong future for trusted journalism". That is exactly what Winifred Robinson & You and Yours are. If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix It.

At least they're belatedly doing things that ought to have been done years ago. Don't just quietly cut backroom staff since politicians don't care about that sort of thing, cut Question Time and Newsnight instead because when politicians personally care about something *then* they sit up and notice.

Is this a tactical move though? Make visible cuts to services that very particular (and vocal) constituencies will be up in arms about to put pressure on legislators? I wonder when Radio 3 might start seeing this too?

Absolute bollocks. As any fool knows, London got UHF 625 TV in 1964 and before that it was 405 line VHF. So why is there a UHF aerial on the rooftop on the right? Idiots. Rest is fine obvs.

Not if you want to watch TV if you're living on a narrowboat, in a caravan or tent in the 'middle of nowhere'. Also there's some rural fibre provision but the network still needs much greater expansion for 100% coverage (please don't mention Starlink).

Will be years before 5G+ mobile broadband is both widely available and dirt cheap, unless subsidised by central government (very unlikely at present) and providers obliged to do quick upgrades. And knowing Vodafone it will be another 20 years before this area finally gets upgraded 😜

Historical Television Website @htw.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I'm still in favour of reducing the number of broadcast digital TV multiplexes to make room for more mobile services (but not complete elimination for the time being) as long as the mobile operators are quickly forced to use those additional allocations.

Historical Television Website @htw.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yes, in *theory*, but as we've seen in the past any new frequencies require additional money to implement so they will charge extra for '6G' or whatever so won't be cheap. Also Vodafone has been laughably slow in giving my area 5G even though they once tried to install it but epically failed.

Z-Shed would be interesting to see but I suspect that it wouldn't exactly be riveting to watch especially by modern standards. Plus potentially still tricky to clear for modern broadcast despite now being over 50 years old.

On reflection, two things Multi-Coloured Saturdays ought to have done but didn't: firstly give us a longer clip from Z-Shed if it was that pivotal. And secondly have shown Swap Trek in full (assuming it still exists complete of course) because based on a vague memory Swap Trek wasn't *that* long.

Ah, what a great read: "EMI came up with the famous but now discontinued 405 -line, 50 frames interlaced (giving 25 complete picture frames per second) scanning system." That standard lasted in service for 48 years. PAL-625 lasted about 40 years. Neither DVB-T or -T2 will last anywhere near that.

They're fantastic aren't they? At the time I couldn't justify paying for them considering how little use they would have been but now in particular they're a goldmine of information. Just read about the earlier proposal to make Channel 5 exclusively for local TV which as we now know wasn't viable!

Television magazine was primarily aimed at the television trade of course but did very occasionally contain TV ident/presentation coverage and prior to the internet was the only regular public source for that sort of thing apart from a few books. Nowadays we're spoilt for choice by comparison.

Of course it still is. However, the first promotional trailer for a natural history series I saw after David Attenborough's 100th birthday featuring another presenter (the otherwise-excellent Chris Packham) featured Packham calling an animal 'iconic'. THAT WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED WITH ATTENBOROUGH.
