Don’t normally bother with Question Time, but seeing it’s just down the road… I see that Braverman is telling lies and being racist on live TV. Pleased to see the locals giving her no quarter.

At what point in this debate about drinking in the stands will the voice of actual fans get heard? It doesn't actually seem to be very popular with the people it most affects.

England is a made up thing. It has no basis in the ineluctable laws of nature. Its extent is defined by Edward II getting his arse handed to him. Athelstan conquering York. The Welsh of Cumbria were incorporated, the Welsh of Gwynedd were not. It is a political idea, an aspiration - not taxonomy.

You can't blame Ed Sheeran for caving in to American stadium owners I suppose. I mean, take these guys in the 60s, they refused to play to racially-segregated audiences in stadiums in the southern states of the USA and who remembers them now?

One reason England does so well is our second generation immigrants outperform their peers which is not true in most OECD countries. We are also very good at integration. And it's v sad that this is never acknowledge in debates on immigration.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

Back when I was learning to play Smiths songs on guitar, John Major was PM and Ukraine had not long regained its independence. If you'd told me then that John Major would live to see a British Prime Minister playing “Rusholme Ruffians” in a European warzone, I’d have struggled to believe you.

Without getting too preachy about this, "suicidal empathy" is pretty much the core idea of Christianity: a religion built around a Christ who submits to death on a cross, because of his love for others.

This Arday thing is, at its core, the story of an inveterate bullshitter. I regret to say there are lots of them around, often in very prominent positions - including those now writing about the story as if it invalidates efforts to make the world a fairer place.

It’s very easy to blame Tuchel for last night, with him being foreign and funny looking, but let’s not overlook the role of the blokes in the pub who started chanting “football’s coming home, with Tommy Tuchel” with half an hour to go. Rank amateurs.

Argentina's run to the semi hasn't been especially taxing (Algeria, Austria, Jordan, Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland), but they've made very heavy weather of it. For most of my life, meeting them in a knockout would have inevitably meant defeat for England. It doesn't feel that way anymore.

Calling a by-election shortly before the summer break – when parliament is in recess so there's less news, even with a new PM – is a pretty *terrible* way to distract from an issue. Farage has basically guaranteed his personal finances and integrity will be headline news all summer.
