when authoritarian dictators tell us that they see western ideas--not western militaries, not western economies, but western *ideas*--as the most existential threat to their regimes, we should see this not as paranoid rantings but cold, accurate analysis. because it's true!

The racism is def a factor, but DOGE also is an important part of this in NoVA. I do also wonder about data centers, but Loudoun has had them for years now. I wouldnt be surprised if taxes from those covered more than half the budget.

also, and I know this is not the point, but knowing a few canadians IRL: their healthcare system kinda sucks. it's not transferable between provinces without a 3 month waiting period (and for short trips, for quebec), it doesn't cover most drugs, and then there's the "you should kill yourself" thing

This article quotes a sociology professor, a lawyer, and an architect who reject the notion that housing prices are set by supply and demand and do not believe that building more homes reduces rents. It is the housing policy equivalent of platforming climate change deniers.

We're already in the midst of the biggest constitutional crisis since 1861, I don't think the next president has to honor pardons from the criminal president in order for our republic to continue.

Democrats should nuke the preemptive pardon power by saying all criminality by this administration is part of an impeachment investigation. Play constitutional hardball, force the courts to accept your interpretation of the law.

love it when anarchists say this because most "local community" councils irl in places like new england or small rural towns are typically deeply *right wing* and hate immigrants and queer people despite representing a "broad swathe" of the entire population. leftism is supposed to be COSMOPOLITAN.

dc statehood is non-negotiable after trump's actions in his second term. republicans despise the people of the city that hosts them, and there is little reason to think that, now that the seal is broken on treating them as an occupied population, a next republican president will be more restrained

The path forward is 3-pronged: 1. Use the power of the state to cripple the GOP as a viable party as much as possible. 2. Develop a culture of severe social opprobrium for Republican electeds as well as voters. 3. Turn a blind eye when ordinary voters lie about who they voted for from 2016-2024.

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.
