Kirkham Bridge has an enduring history crossing North Yorkshire’s River Derwent. First recorded in 1444, the current Grade II listed gritstone bridge was built in 1806 by renowned architect John Carr, The bridge was a crucial checkpoint for commercial navigation. An Act of Parliament in 1702 officially opened the River Derwent to boat traffic up to Malton, and a specialised navigation lock was constructed right at Kirkham Abbey to help barges bypass the shallows. Sadly, devastating floods in 1930 severely damaged the Kirkham lock gates, stranding vessels and leading to the closure of the commercial waterway Image: Paul Tomlin CC BY 2,0

🔥 Hot welcome for Trump in Ireland 🔥 🫡🇮🇪
A family in Co Clare have painted a giant 'F*** Trump' slogan in the field behind their house, positioned directly under the flight path for Air Force One at Shannon Airport as Donald Trump jets into Ireland for a golf weekend.
The woman responsible revealed she had intended to join the protest outside the Trump golf course and hotel. However, stringent security measures mean any Irish citizens attempting to exercise their right to protest will be kept well away from Trump throughout the weekend.

https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/huge-explicit-trump-sign-greet-37652218A huge piece of artwork protesting Trump’s visit to Ireland has been spotted on a beach in Dublin Bay, just as the president is due to arrive in the country over the weekend.

The sand mural features the words “NO KINGS — GAZA IRAN ICE” which have been carved into the beach by the campaigning group Uplift. It was designed by Waterford environmental artist Seán Corcoran,

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.
