Bisabuelo José Jesús Varela was born in Huachinera, Sonora, MX in 1895. By that time his village was one of the last remnants of a group of related tribes (Tegüima, Eudeve, Jova, et al) that had come to be known collectively as the Ópata. Today their languages exist only in Jesuit texts.
