Incredibly brazen for the Prime Minister to boast about the “lasting benefits” of expanding fossil fuel production on a day like today. Record-breaking heatwaves. Toxic smoke engulfing cities and towns. Out of control wildfires forcing entire communities to evacuate. /1

Truly don't understand why Ottawa is not making a big deal of its 200th birthday. It's the best city with great stuff to do and we should be celebrating. Bytown Bicentennial. It's right there.

Okay, instead of boycotting, they should give the LA Olympics to Tokyo. They probably still have all the venues and it was the Covid Olympics, so no one got to spectate. This is about boycotting the US. Obviously Russia isn't invited. And neither is Israel.

At this point I’m almost wondering if a Conservative minority government would’ve been less harmful, if only because they’d be less effective at implementing the same policies. The pushback would be louder, there’d be checks and balances. But Carney is bulldozing Canada with conservative reforms…

This could be the start of Carney stacking the senate with people who will vote in favour of his pro-corporate reforms. The senate is one of the few places where his legislation is still slightly scrutinized. Given Carney’s other actions, it would make sense he’d want to remove that “barrier.”
From the prime minister’s website:

“Prime Minister Carney modernises Senate appointment process to respond to Canada's emerging challenges
July 7, 2026
Ottawa, Ontario
The world is changing rapidly. In response, Canada's new government is acting with urgency and ambition to build a stronger, more independent, more resilient country.
That requires strong, effective, and focused representatives who can ensure Canada's institutions are equipped to respond to the challenges of the country they serve.”

My Alfie thoughts, in order: - Okay, if he wants to be a loser who leaves again, I can't be hurt in the same way twice. - Going to Toronto is pretty twisted though. - I'm not convinced he's an incredible coach, so my hot take is: this is probably fine. - WAIT, WHAT ABOUT ERIK KARLSSON COMING HOME???

This is OBSCENE The developer who demovicted dozens of tenants from a heritage building at Bank & Nepean was being pursued for *$65 MILLION IN DEBTS* when the City of Ottawa rezoned the property to let the developer build a luxury condo No condo was ever built and the property is now up for sale
OTTAWA CITIZEN

Now a review of court filings and other public documents conducted by the Ottawa Citizen has revealed that the developers who bought the block were fending off creditors even as they were actively working to evict tenants living there with a reported plan of developing the property into housing units. That timeline raises questions about whether the City of Ottawa has — or ought to have — the power to assess the financial capacity of developers seeking tenant displacement ahead of major renovations or demolitions. The court documents show that numerous private and institutional creditors have been pursuing the development group behind the Bank Street evictions over tens of millions of dollars in loans and other alleged debts.

Here in #OttCity I’d guess half our LRT runs thru miles of greenbelt/farmland or is buried along a river, and/or has stations orphaned at highway off-ramps. This was a conscious choice, to hamstring dev because it was cheap. Inept planning, lack of leadership to see value.

If you’re wondering why the City of Ottawa decided to focus on the tinniest slice of owned emissions
City of Ottawa
Emissions by Source
Bus electrification vs. cars vs. home heating
Home + Building
2,280.00
residential heating a half of this
- 2,400,000
2,000,000
Entire OC Transpo bus fleet =106,000 t CO, e/yr - all diesel
Electrifying every bus cuts under 2% of city emissions.
2027 target (~350 e-buses)
saves ~25,000 t/yr — a sliver.
1,600,000
Cars
1,260,000 CO, e
Waste + agriculture
600,000 CO,0
Diesel: trucks & freight
610,000(O0
800,000
Electricity (buildings)
450,000 CO,0
- 400,000
- 0
Bus fleet
Electricity
Waste
Diesel freight
Cars
Gas heat
Emissions Source
Approximate - reconstructed from City of Ottawa community & corporate GHG inventories (2020 baseline) and OC Transpo figures.
Bars show annual emissions by source. Splitting gas heat into residential vs. commercial would put each roughly level with Cars.

The Netherlands has introduced a €49 monthly ticket for unlimited nationwide train travel—a bold political response to soaring energy costs. When prices at the pump rise, you can either double down on car dependency, or give people attractive alternatives. The Dutch are (again) choosing the latter.
