The amount of Amazon workers relying on SNAP and Medicaid has nearly tripled since 2020 — while Amazon’s annual profits soared by over 550%. It’s the same story everywhere: corporate profits are at record highs, while workers’ share of the economy is at a record low. We must unrig the system.

Jim Henson was born on this day in 1936.
Edward Hopper's 'Nighthawks', but the man and woman at the counter of the diner are now Fozzie and Miss Piggy. The guy with his back to us is now Bert, but Bert is being operated by Frank Oz, who is crouched down in front of the counter. The waiter/server is now Jim Henson who is looking intently at Kermit, and Kermit, who is occupying half of Jim's right arm, is looking intently at Jim. The diner is now called "JIMMYS".

Over the course of my 30s I’ve lost at least 40kg - or 88lbs if you’ve not gone metric. It’s wild to me that, if things go to plan, I’ll be starting my 40s at under 100kg (220lbs, or 15st 10). I was at university last time I weighed around that. Given the health benefits, it’s feeling pretty good!

holy shit, this is the whole ballgame in a single paragraph gAI systems require mass theft of copyrighted works, for the explicit purpose of replacing the market for the people they stole from, and the people in charge knew what they were doing ahead of time, and did it anyway

Being locked into the Apple ecosystem, the iPhone Duo looks like a pretty great foldable. Problem is, aside from the screens it isn’t enough iPhone for me. I take too many photos to trade off the Pro camera setup for the Duo screen. Especially at the Duo price 😅 And the 18 Pro Max does look great…

So the Star Trek 60 events at the Science Museum were great. Got to hear two literal rocket scientists talk about their work on the Artemis Programme, which was awesome. Got a photo in Discovery’s captain’s chair, too. So that’s great. And now hold 0.107% of a Guinness world record. Which is nice.

as so often, Terry Pratchett had it nailed.
Death and Susan talking in Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—"

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

"They're not the same at all!"

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET— Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME... SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

"But people have got to believe that, or what's the point?"

MY POINT EXACTLY.

So the queue for Star Trek 60 at the Science Museum is… long. Like, all the way down the road, round the corner, and halfway down the next road. So many Trekkies, it’s great. Pretty sure I’ve seen cosplay of every Starfleet uniform and in almost every division colour. And so many pointy ears!

Today we thought we'd talk about this gentleman who some of you may recognise. Joseph Rowntree was a Quaker, confectioner, philanthropist and Merchant Adventurer. Plus as you can see in this photo quite the natty dresser.
We are looking at an older gentleman who is balding but has a very tidy white beard and is wearing wire frame spectacles. He looks directly at the camera with a warm expression. He is wearing a three piece check wool suit with a string tie held with a metal clip.

Journalists need to stop describing these incidents in terms implying software has agency and intent. It does not. The people who created a faulty and dangerous product are the ones responsible for whatever happens, and must be held to account, with punitive financial penalties for damage done.
