New Horizons is now *three days away* from shutting off its two heliophysics instruments, simply because NASA has not provided the $2M in funding it had promised to the mission last year or this year. There is no science basis for shutting these off. Our earlier coverage:

NIH's Aug 2026 proposal would scrap exact scores and percentiles for three broad bins (top = top 25%). With funding rates at 5% or lower, too much then rides on administrative discretion. It devalues peer review and is a deterrent to engage. Tell NIH before Oct 13. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

I co-sign this great summary from @dereklowe.bsky.social . The goal is to destroy academic science, and these are the reasons. And all the “gold standard” and “needs reform” and “not high risk” stuff is transparent bullshit to hide the ball on what they are doing.

Science
science. But let me make something clear right up front. When I talk to people about this subject (and that includes some journalists as well) and say what I'm about to at the end of this paragaph I am sometimes met with disbelief. But I mean what I say and I am trying my best to say what I mean: The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop. They hate where that money goes, and they hate who it goes to. They want to keep all that money for themselves, to hand out to favored cronies who can help them get elected and to steer yet more money and more power back into their hands.
That's it. That's the story. They are naturally not putting it in those words, but instead talking about "gold standard science" and the
"reproducibility crisis" and funding "bold inquiry" for "transformational
breakthroughs". This is all bullshit, and it's important to realize that. Shameless hand-waving bullshit, delivered in a how-dare-vou-

I just withdrew my application for the NIGMS Director position....
Dear Ms. Fogel: I had applied for the position of Director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) on November 21, 2025. I was subsequently informed that I had passed the first level of review (although I have no idea what that means).

I am writing today to withdraw my application. As I mentioned in my materials, it would be hard for me to consider this position, even it were to be offered, given two-career issues with my family.

I saw this video this morning, posted on the official NIH Director's X account (https://x.com/NIHDirector_Jay/status/2013752138493559265). This made me fully realize that I should not waste my time or yours with my application as I cannot imagine working for NIH leadership that has so little respect for facts, the NIH and its staff, and the American public (and, I might add, themselves).

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely yours,

Jeremy M. Berg
