Pretty incredible: Zack #Polanski refuses to say Israel has the right to exist. Not an ambush or a trick - just a simple question that follows logically from the Greens Zionism motion.so I guess he doesn’t - or else is too scared of his own party to say so www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/...

The right-wing papers seem happy to overlook that Badenoch has united her party by losing the right, purging the left and embracing Trussonomics and the myth of self-funding tax cuts, leaving the party at least four points down in the polls on the last election. What a splendid achievement!

Kane and Unable: my SKETCH of Kemi Badenoch's decision to conduct her broadcast interviews as a tribute to Jeffrey Archer. thecritic.co.uk/kane...

Kemi Badenoch’s broadcast interviews on Tuesday were a touching celebration of someonewhose extravagant boasts and relaxed relationship with reality won the heart of Conservative members. There was also a lot of discussion of Jeffrey Archer.

The Tory leader opened her chat with BBC Breakfast viewers by talking about the bestselling novelist messaging her only the previous day. She would reply with emojis, she said, and we got an image of a somewhat one-sided chat that allowed Archer to allude to his closeness to Top People. Or Badenoch, anyway.

Not, of course, that the Master Storyteller ever felt constrained by the truth. It was a stellar career built on an instinct for what the audience wants to hear, a gift for “inaccurate precis”, and a willingness, when necessary, to simply say things that weren’t true. Sorry, I’ve completely lost track of who I’m writing about.

Welcome to Toryland, where victory is inevitable. My SKETCH. thecritic.co.uk/welc...
The Tory leader has opened her party’s conference with so many sketchable interventions that it might be a deliberate bid simply to overwhelm satirists. There’s the 30,000-word tract on her beliefs whose 16 pages on the economy contain no mention of trade and a single allusion to Brexit — “I call it Kemistry,” she told the Sunday Times. There’s the 87-foot “Birmingham Tapestry”, which celebrates Badenoch’s endless triumphs of the past two years. There’s the amazing levels of confidence: in her opening address on Sunday, Badenoch confidently predicted election victory with David Steel-like brio.

Was any of this a touch previous? Well, in a party that was performing less well it might be, but these are the Conservatives, the party currently enjoying a 19% lead in the polls, predicted to win a majority of 130 at the next election. It’s no wonder that… hang on, I’m hearing that, apologies, those numbers should be “currently polling at 19% and predicted to win 130 seats.”

This is depressing. If you are against antisemitism, I am afraid it is now impossible to vote Green. What is happening in Gaza is genocide and in the West Bank ethnic cleansing, at minimum. That does NOT mean that Zionism is racism, or — ffs — that attending a Zionist synagogue makes you a racist*

Something that crops up again and again in interviews is that Badenoch sees the compromises the Conservative party makes with the electorate to win elections as terrible moral mistakes. She's the Tories' Corbyn.

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.
