It seems to have become commonplace to blame net zero for Britain’s high energy bills and/or weak job market… … and I guess I’ll have to explain again why there is very little evidence of this. Britain has plenty of economic problems; net zero is not high on that list (though climate change is) 🧵

I reckon 2030s is going to be a great decade. EVs and solar will drive all kinds of transport prices way down. Oil demand will be crushed by massive electrification of industry and transport. 2026-2030 though. It’s not looking great people.

Completely immoral. By subsidising fossil fuel use in a country that can afford to pay and transition, it will make more essential energy supplies in the global south unaffordable. Focus on making just renewable electricity more affordable. And electrify our economy. @zackpolanski.bsky.social

Solar farms don't increase flooding risks, usually support wildflowers and biodiversity net gain, reduce pesticides/fertilizer use and runoff to rivers, reduce overall national water usage, prevent other buildings on the space, can still graze sheep etc.

We need to judge a political party by what they do with their power. The Green Party aren’t serious about tackling climate change. Large Solar Farms are the lowest carbon, lowest cost energy we can get. They are also more biodiverse than the farmland they will replace.

I don’t usually post about politics. But as a TV licence payer, I expect the BBC to do its job. “If one says it’s raining and another says it’s dry, you don’t quote both — you look out the window.” It couldn’t be clearer which side’s narrative accurately reflects the facts.

A historic turning point for clean heating in Europe: For the first time, in the first half of 2025 sales of heat pumps in Germany have surpassed those of gas boilers. This is a big milestone, demonstrating that the transition away from fossil fuels in our buildings is not just a future ambition.

Other key challenge is residential buildings and electrified heat. There needs to be more progress here to get to half of buildings having electrified heat by mid-2030s before then ramping up through to 2040.

It seems to me that most of the harmful political acts of the last decade have come about because no one wants to explain the benefits of very important but unpopular things. Like the EU, legal aid and foreign aid. It would be nice if politicians actually led sometimes.

"More solar leads to more coal in China." This is true in the short term, but even then the effect is much less emissions. Long term we will produce solar with solar and the effect is no emissions. I suspect this hand wringing is often by people who can't see the forest for the trees.

Love the idea of holons. This is a much more compelling and workable vision of local energy networks than the GLA’s ongoing fixation with heat networks. Distributing electrons locally is much easier than moving heat locally and solves many more problems.
