UNDERFLOOR CONFUSION The recent test report from Energy House at @salforduni.bsky.social is possibly causing confusion. Just 2 radiators (1 upstairs, 1 down) could heat the whole Barrett house with low temperature. Yet it seems the UFH industry are suggesting radiators will be problematic
Drawing of a radiator which is 1200 mm long and 700 mm high. It's a type 22 radiator. The drawing also shows what the flow temperature to the radiator would need to be at four different outside temperatures: -3°C, 0°C, 5°C and 10°C. The radiator is for a heat pump system meaning the return temperature is designed to be 5°C lower than the flow temperature.
040
Nathan Gambling @betatalk.bsky.social · 12/12/2024
HOW QUICK IS YOUR RADIATOR It's worth remembering that power (measured in Watts) has seconds built in. Heat moves out of a home at different speeds (insulated or not) The driving force of heat into a home is the difference in temperature between room temperature & the MWT inside the radiator 1/
A diagram of a radiator 1200mm long by 600mm high. It is a type 22 radiator meaning it has 2 panels and 2 converters. Convectors are just thin pieces of metal tack welded to the panel to increase the surface area of a radiator.

The diagram illustrates the power output for different conditions. The speed at which heat leaves a radiator is determined by the room temperature and the mean water temperature inside the radiator.

The mean water temperature is determined by knowing the flow and return temperature. The mean is in-between these two temperatures...

For instance, the image shows what the power output of the radiator will be if there was a mean water temperature of 42.5 degrees Celsius. This would mean there is a flow temperature of 45°C and a return temperature of 40°C.

One the mean water temperature is know, it is the difference between this and the room temperature which denotes how quickly heat will move into a room. Knowing the power rating at different DTs is helpful in understanding how well a home can be heated with low flow temperature. Many homes can already have low flow temperatures in their heating systems in certain conditions
