Completely agree. We should be using the fact that aircon is a high-status item to drive heat pump adoption. There’s a grant for air-to-air, but no-one is accessing it (yet), as the installer qualifications are much too onerous for the kind of companies that fit domestically. A classic fail.
120
Henry Pelly @henrypelly.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
So that is going to be at least £1.95/day for a panel heater vs £1.65/day for a heat pump (that always keeps your room at an ideal temperature). In practice modern heat pumps optimisers (Havenwise, Adia Thermal, Homely, Passiv) save much more than 20%! Heat pumps are better!
100
Henry Pelly @henrypelly.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
You might say that you only put the Panel heaters on when you are in the living room. This is less comfortable, but doable. The heat output for this period will need to be 25% higher. So assume a heat load of 1.25kW for 6 hours. Which is 7.5kWh. But this is likely to be at Standard or peak rate.
100
Henry Pelly @henrypelly.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
So so for a living room: Daily panel heater cost in Passivhaus - £0.96/day Heat pump cost in Passivhaus - £0.27/day Panel heater in Victorian Semi - £4.80/day Heat Pump cost in Victoria Semi - £1.60/day
110
Henry Pelly @henrypelly.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
But to answer your specific questions, here are some assumption: Av.Living room size in UK ~20m2 Heat loss at -3C if Passivhaus - <200W. So Energy use is <4.8kW Heat loss if Victorian Semi ~ 1kW. So Energy use is ~24kW Assume blended cost of electricity using Octopus Cosy of 20p/kWh
210
Henry Pelly @henrypelly.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
Neither of those factors make a panel heater (COP of 1) a more effective heat source than a heat pump (COP of 3.5+) either way the heat pump will be 72% cheaper to run. Sure in a Passivhaus flat you might argue that the upfront cost of a heat pump isn’t worth it. But for most normal houses it is.
010
Henry Pelly @henrypelly.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
lol! Panel heaters are a ruinously expensive way to heat. Even an appallingly installed heat pump would be cheaper to run than those! Moreover my heat pump had excellent controls and perfect room-by-room control is possible with Adia or similar

The tech is almost certainly there for your house. I’ve got a heat pump work to very well in a 200m2 C14th listed house. It’s much cheaper than Gas. The issue is that it’s hard to find installers that are competent enough to manage the perceived risk.

It seems to have become commonplace to blame net zero for Britain’s high energy bills and/or weak job market… … and I guess I’ll have to explain again why there is very little evidence of this. Britain has plenty of economic problems; net zero is not high on that list (though climate change is) 🧵

These are all air-to-water. Which don’t typically do cooling well as radiators aren‘t great at it. You’ll need to replace radiators with fancoils to get cooling. But air to-air or aircon is really hard to get wrong. Especially if you only need a few internal units in your house.

Heat Pumps are great things. They cut home emissions by at least 80%. Disconnecting a gas meter and selecting an off-peak electricity tariff are pretty straightforward. And devices like @adiathermal.bsky.social minimise radiator changes and save money by maximising the use of off-peak electricity.

Completely immoral. By subsidising fossil fuel use in a country that can afford to pay and transition, it will make more essential energy supplies in the global south unaffordable. Focus on making just renewable electricity more affordable. And electrify our economy. @zackpolanski.bsky.social

I’m sure there are many great ways to procure solar power. We need to use all the avenues. But blocking urgently needed projects because you don’t like who they are or where they are from is wrong. It’s a delay we can’t afford. Environmentally or Finacially.

Henry Pelly @henrypelly.bsky.social · 18/04/2026
Insisting that renewable energy projects (which are urgently needed) are only acceptable if they aren’t delivered by the organisations that best placed to do this work seems to be a very silly position to take.
120
Henry Pelly @henrypelly.bsky.social · 18/04/2026
I think that low carbon, low cost renewable energy projects are good, people funding them are doing good work and preventing their adoption is bad. In order for people to take a risk (like building stuff), they need to see a reasonable return to make it worthwhile.
141
Henry Pelly @henrypelly.bsky.social · 18/04/2026
Because the words ‘extractive’ and ‘industrial’ are much more properly applied to the gas-fired infrastructure that this solar farm will replace and are the root cause of the ‘ridiculous energy prices’ that the Green Party is complaining about.
240
Henry Pelly @henrypelly.bsky.social · 18/04/2026
Just to clarify, it your position that significant investment in the lowest carbon, lowest cost form of energy that will supply people in your region is ‘bad‘, because the organisation that is prepared to fund it, is a global infrastructure specialist and not headquartered in the UK?
120
Henry Pelly @henrypelly.bsky.social · 18/04/2026
We need to judge a political party by what they do with their power. The Green Party aren’t serious about tackling climate change. Large Solar Farms are the lowest carbon, lowest cost energy we can get. They are also more biodiverse than the farmland they will replace.

Jaga ones are great (but are pricy). Cheaper ones can be noisier. In general they can be a good way to get more heat from a wall unit than a radiator. If they are attached to a heat pump you’ll be able to get them to do cooling (but will need some sort of condensate drain)
