I would say: everything is a potential toy. Anything can be a toy when you're bored. Once you play with it, it's a toy, and you can play with pretty much any object. The only things that are exclusively toys, are objects with ~no other function~ than to be played with.

iirc Disney did almost exactly that a few years in. and the temptation for all the smaller IP holders (independent artists, etc.) is the same: ignore them, scrape their work, and dare them to sue. IP law is a stumbling block for AI development, not a stake in the heart.

yeah. like, it would definitely put pressure on their already really bad business models; but even if we had had copyright crackdowns from the start, it's pretty likely they would've just come up with some kind of pay-off arrangement with the big IP landlords (media conglomerates) and kept going.

France is objectively much less unequal in wealth than the USA, with a very generous pension system for retirees & far more generous labor laws. Their individual tax burden is higher than ours (43.5% vs. 25.6%). Yet their debt-to-GDP ratio is comparable to ours (116% vs 124%). Where'd the wealth go?
