Dancing crabs, some time in the 1830s 🦀
Coloured lithograph of two dark green crabs (I have no idea what species they’re meant to be if any - C maenas I guess?) dancing a horn pipe or jig together, stood on their swimming legs on a bed of sand and shells. By Henry Monnier from Le Caricature magazine, probably 1831

When we think of high-quality #Roman wall painting, we usually imagine the domus of a senator. This floating #Dionysiac youth comes from a very different reality: a high-end rental block for the ancient middle class. Welcome to the Case a Giardino in #Ostia. #FrescoFriday 🧵 #AncientBluesky 🏺
FRESCO FROM THE CASA DELLE IERODULE, 125-130 CE. OSTIA ANTICA

This is a damaged but vibrant Hadrianic wall fresco photographed in situ on the standing ground-floor masonry of Room 4 of the so-called Casa delle Ierodule, part of a surprisingly modern self-contained block of rental flats known as the Case a Giardino or Garden Houses. The fresco's composition features a beautiful Fourth-Style decorative scheme, where a floating Dionysiac youth is framed within a delicate architectural setting. The youth is rendered with fluid, confident brushstrokes, positioned against a solid field of intense red-orange pigment. He is flanked by slender columns and accompanied by delicately draped green garlands in the upper registers of the panel. The interplay of the rich red and ochre yellow fields creates a sophisticated sense of depth and luxury, typical of the high-end interior finishes provided by local workshops to affluent mercantile tenants in Ostia Antica.

🐝 World Bee Day 🐝 This stunning silver tetradrachm cones from the ancient city of Ephesos. Both the bee and the stag were connected with Artemis, who was a protectress of Ephesos. We honour both these gorgeous creatures today. #WorldBeeDay #Artemis #Ephesos
Description from the J. Paul Getty Museum: “This silver tetradrachm is stamped on the obverse with a bee within a dotted border, with the Greek letters, Ε (‘epsilon’) and Φ (‘phi’), to either side. The reverse shows the foreparts of a stag kneeling in right profile, looking back towards a palm tree. An inscription to the right reads ΚΑΡΝΩ[Ψ] (‘KARNO[PS]’). #MosaicMonday takes us to the #VaticanMuseums to admire the huge octagonal #mosaic removed from the baths of ancient #Ocriculum in #Umbria, today's #Otricoli, in 1780. It dates to just before 200 CE and shows battles between #Lapiths and #centaurs, and a #thiasos of sea monsters. #AncientBluesky 🏺
MOSAIC OF OTRICOLI, C. 190 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS

The discoveries at Pompeii and in the area of Vesuvius in the later C18 spurred the popes to sponsor digs in their own territories. The ancient city of Ocriculum on the Tiber in Umbria had been made rich by its olive oil trade with Rome and left conspicuous ruins which were excavated beginning in 1770. In the city baths this intricate octagonal mosaic was discovered nearly intact, with only the central emblema destroyed. It was moved to the Sala Rotunda in the Vatican Museums and a new emblema was made for it in 1791. It is divided into eight sections that radiate outward from a central octagon, and has three registers of scenes, all against a white background. The innermost register shows a Lapith, a wild Greek, battling a centaur. Below is a register with a huge floral garland sporting a theatrical mask at its centre, which is part of the restoration of 1791. The widest register, the outermost, shows marine creatures, here a sea griffin, a marine centaur with club and shield, and a sea horse, part of a marine thiasos or celebratory procession.

#SarcophagusSaturday at the #BritishMuseum finds us in front of this terracotta #larnax or cinerary urn from #Chiusi, dating from 150-100 BCE. A stoutish blond youth reclines on the lid, above a battle scene on the front, but the inscription names a woman, Thana Ancarui Thelesa. #AncientBluesky 🏺
TERRACOTTA LARNAX, 150-100 BCE. BRITISH MUSEUM

The curious thing about Etruscan terracotta cinerary urns or larnakes of this kind is that though they were made of an inexpensive material, they were often lavishly painted to a very high standard, like this one. They were even mass produced. This example from Chiusi has a lid with a young man in a loose tunic, blond and clean-shaven, holding a phiale or libation bowl, leaning on his left elbow atop a kline or couch. The box of the larnax has a battle scene with five warriors, which could be one of many mythological episodes. It too is richly painted. The painted inscription on the lid names a woman, Thana Ancarui Thelesa, which testifies to the "pre-need" nature of these urns. Maybe a woman's larnax wasn't available, or maybe this one was just the most beautiful vessel to accompany the deceased into eternity.
