Amusing things discovered in the archives today: in the early 1900s the university had admins titled simply “Dean of Men” and “Dean of Women”. (The Dean of Women was, of course, a man).

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

I am tired of having to pretend that the value of studying my discipline solely rests on the "marketable skills" we teach. Sometimes things are just worth knowing and doing because they make your life bigger and richer.

If I was in charge of an educational institution and learned that a technology fostered “cognitive surrender” in young people, I’d like to think I would do everything in my power to keep it away from the young people who pay my institution to educate them. But I guess I’m just a weirdo.
Students are using artificial intelligence for everything, including cheating, and a recent M.I.T. report said the technology was creating
"cognitive surrender."

A 9/11 thought: I must be a rare(ish) example of a Brit my age to have seen things unfold live on tv. It was lunchtime, I was off school sick, watching daytime tv. It was interrupted by a BBC breaking news broadcast after the 1st plane. I then watched the 2nd plane and the collapses happen live.

We know how to teach books in the age of AI: small classes, close reading, research-engaged learning (which is how you ’let students see you struggle’). The issue is nobody will hire and pay the requisite # of faculty to offer this.

Good. It's a start. Too many school & college administrators can't see through the AI marketing hype. It's way past time to slow down — to stop — and think things through in partnership with teachers, professors, and education researchers.

Today’s fun research factoid is that in the early 19th century (when it was being used as a amphitheatre-type space), the Mausoleum of Augustus hosted a re-enactment/production of the fall of Troy in which fireworks were used to give the impression of the burning citadel!

A good reminder that when you enjoy something someone has done -- a book they wrote, a performance they gave, a speech they made, whatever -- it is incredibly powerful to just reach out and tell them directly.
