Finally catching up on the Celebrity Traitors so I know I’m behind every other person in the UK right now. I see once again they’ve got the token Celts (one Welsh, one Scottish, one Irish). But more importantly they’ve got Richard E Grant!

Now that autumn is here, it’s time to think about coats.
1833 French fashion plate of two men looking bang on for autumn/winter. The one on the left wears grey trousers, a dark blue waistcoat and a long grey-green coat that’s open and pushed back, along with a top hat and a very nice cane. On the right, his friend looks smug - as well he might - in a massive dark blue greatcoat with caped shoulders, that covers him to the ankles and looks to be trimmed with velvet or maybe sealskin. He also wears a top hat and a bit of his black waistcoat and white shirt is visible

Went down a rabbit hole about jet (the material) this evening and was really surprised to find it only dates from the Jurassic period!! I thought for sure it’d be from the Carboniferous. Pictured is something that definitely isn’t Jurassic

One of my dad-like hobby horses is Arctic Exploration and in particular the Franklin expedition. A thing that particularly strikes me about the “post colonial revisionist” (read: white academics) version is to demonize Franklin and say things like “Crozier would have done better”

‘Roasted Chestnuts’. I love an elaborate visual joke. After the Napoleonic Wars, Highland regiments were among those stationed in Paris and the locals were fascinated by the men’s kilts, and what was under them. There are several similar images but I love the facial expressions in this one.
Two passing women look on with curious (and prurient) interest as a Highlander soldier in red coat and kilt lifts his kilt up to hold a serving of roast chestnuts that he’s buying from two other women at their street stall. One woman looks away, perhaps in embarrassment; the other is perfectly positioned to see just what he has under the kilt. The caption is ‘Marrons Rotia’ (roasted chestnuts); the image is from the late 1810s
