The historic Plas Newydd cottage in Llangollen is famed for its decorative arts, first collected and installed by Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby in the early 1800s. The wood carvings are particularly stunning, covering walls and ceilings inside, with more outside. Pics + history: wp.me/pcZwQK-5CG

My first visit to Liverpool's Catholic Cathedral by Frederick Gibberd was a delightful surprise. Light-filled and full of colour, with the brick-vaulted crypt by Lutyens beneath, it has a fascinating history as the 4th of 3 previous attempts to build a Catholic cathedral. More at wp.me/pcZwQK-a2S

A 2,300-year-old silver container in the shape of a scallop-shell decorated with an octopus 🐙 It may once have held cosmetics. From Paternò, Sicily. Altes Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a silver shell-shaped container with an eight-armed octopus in relief at the centre of the lid. The arms of the octopus curl outwards across the ridges of the shell’s surface. This ornate shell container has a hinged lid and may once have been a cosmetic container . It is displayed on a clear stand in a museum case. Dimensions: 13.3 × 13.2 × 3 cm. It is part of the Silver Treasure from Paternò, Sicily, a hoard discovered in 1909, consisting of tableware and toiletries. Dated 4th-3rd century BC.

A scene from The Iliad, famous in Greek and Roman art, here engraved onto a gold ring as an intaglio seal: the Trojan princess Kassandra clutching at the ancient wooden statue of the goddess Athena, as Troy falls. Ajax the Lesser would rip her away, defiling the statue and temple. 🏺 1/ 📸 me
This heavy gold ring is decorated with a depiction of Kassandra, King Priam's most beautiful daughter, before the Palladion, the cult statue of Athena in Troy. The reversed lettering of Kassandra's name indicates that the ring was intended to be used as a seal.
