🧵 For anyone wondering whether IPC and public health leaders are competent to manage Ebola, the answer is a categorical "no". Current WHO guidance, released May 17, 2026, is still based on the 5-micron error (p51 & 58), out of date since 1934. The quacks responsible should be in jail.
Justification
Protection of the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth is an integral part of standard and
droplet precautions (19, 122, 123). Droplet precautions consist of IPC measures that aim to prevent
infection with pathogens that can be transmitted by large-particle droplets (larger than 5 μm).
Contamination of mucous membranes is probably the most important mode for filovirus transmission.
Hence, PPE to protect mucosae is essential to prevent transmission. Because of the lack of effective
viral-specific treatments and the high case-fatality rate, the GDG felt that a strong recommendation was
warranted.

Source: https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789240111332Justification
An aerosol-generating procedure is a medical procedure that can induce the production of aerosols of
various sizes, including small (< 5 µm) particles. While surgical masks provide barrier protection against
droplets, sprays and splashes of body fluids, they do not protect from exposure to airborne particles.
Particulate respirators provide protection from exposure to particles, including small-particle aerosols
and droplets, provided that the respirator is fit-tested and a seal check is done when the respirator is
put on. While filovirus-specific evidence is lacking, there is a lot of evidence regarding other pathogens
(e.g. Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, SARS) indicating the need for a particulate respirator to be
used during aerosol-generating procedures (124, 125).

Retraction needed. It's spectacular how 50+ years of progress in aerosol science still fails to penetrate the epistemic community of medicine.

Ebola is not a disease that should be chased around the world after it spreads. Once transmission enters the global transportation network, it can move to anywhere and from there everywhere. Effective management means acting before that happens. WHN paper: whn.global/scientific/m... #Ebola

Highlighting this Retraction Watch article because it's both incredibly serious, and just the tip of the iceberg. This reflects a culture of sloppiness and self-interest that is far too widespread in clinical "science" circles, from the "5-micron error" to shoddy evidence synthesis practices. See 🧵

In fact, we’re seeing exponential growth in patient numbers across all disease and age groups in Finland. The trend is strikingly linear on a log scale, with no sign of any slowdown since 2020. No health system can take this for long. It's just a matter of time. 8/x

Jay Bhattacharya's plan for a new pandemic is for everyone to suddenly be healthy.
Ultimately, public health agencies encouraging people to take whatever steps they can to improve their health will have a dramatic effect during the next pandemic. Whether simply by stopping smoking, controlling hypertension or diabetes, or getting up and walking more, anything that makes the population healthier will prepare us better for the next pandemic.

The best pandemic preparedness playbook for the United States is making America healthy again.

happy 11th anniversary to this email sent to all staff at the School of Mathematics and Statistics
Dear All,

I am delighted to report to you the first results of an experiment that is being conducted in the tea room of this Department.

On 29 August, an Oslo Stainless Steel Cutlery Set (48 Pieces: 12 Knifes, 12 Forks, 12 Tea Spoons, 12 Dinner Spoons) was placed in a drawer in the Departmental tea room. A poster asking not to remove the cutlery from the tea room was attached in a visible location.

The original research plan was to monitor (in real time) the disappearance of the cutlery from the tea room and then fit a point/counting process model to the observed data. However, as the research project failed to attract any major grants (and so hiring a research assistant to do the work was impossible), it was decided to conduct opportunistic discrete monitoring only.

Here is the first result: sixty days in the experiment, the disappearance rates stand as follows:

Knives: 8.3%
Forks: 100%
Tea spoons: 58.3%
Dinner spoons: 41.7%

Possible conclusions include, but are not limited to, the following:

the people who removed the missing cutlery don’t understand written English; they don’t see forks as a special case of cutlery; forks are needed to do some kind of mathematics; the knives from the set are no good; small spoons are slightly more attractive than the large ones; things left in our tea room tend to disappear even if they are not edible; further research is needed to fully understand the phenomenon.

Best,
kostya borovkov
