No need for alarm, of course -- and certainly no need to address the root causes of the sharp rise in anxiety, ADHD, depression and sleep disorders since 2020.

The person behind Sweden's herd immunity approach to dealing with C19: "The next pandemic will be solved with trust". Right. Herd immunity is a superior strategy as it allows for higher GDP growth at the expense of deaths. All they have to to is to convince everyone. 1/x

Healthy Life Years (HLY) in the EU area. 1/x
Line chart showing EU-27 Healthy Life Years (HLY) trends from 2014 to 2023, with the x-axis extending to 2030 for future reference. Data is sourced from Eurostat and was published on 12 March 2026.
Three metric groups are displayed on the left axis. HLY at birth, shown for both sexes, men, and women separately, ranges between 61 and 65 years across the period, reaching approximately 63 years by 2023. The second group shows total age reached when adding HLY measured from age 50, clustering between 67 and 70 years, with the 2023 value around 69 years. The third group shows total age reached when adding HLY measured from age 65, the highest of the three, ranging from 73 to 75 years and settling near 74 years in 2023. All three groups follow a similar pattern: gradual improvement from 2014 to a peak around 2019, a notable dip in 2020–2021 likely related to the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by partial recovery through 2023. Women consistently show slightly higher values than men across all categories.
The secondary right axis tracks two gap measures. The first is the difference between (50 + HLY at 50) and HLY at birth, hovering around 6–8 years. The second is the difference between (65 + HLY at 65) and HLY at birth, around 11–13 years. Both gaps remaining persistently positive indicates that people who reach age 50 or 65 can expect proportionally more healthy years ahead than the at-birth estimate predicts, reflecting the impact of early mortality on the birth-based measure. Cancer-related deaths of 5-9 year olds in Sweden. 1/x
Bar chart showing causes of death per 100,000 among children aged 5–9 in Sweden from 1997 to 2024. The chart highlights causes with the largest absolute increase in 2023–2024 compared with the 1997–2019 average. Earlier years show generally low and fluctuating mortality levels. A clear rise appears in 2023 and especially 2024, when the total height of the stacked bar reaches the highest level in the series.

Most of the increase is driven by cancer diagnoses within ICD-10 group C00–D48. The largest contributors include malignant neoplasms of bone and articular cartilage (C41 and C40), diffuse non-Hodgkin lymphoma (C83), leukaemia of unspecified cell type (C95), malignant neoplasm of adrenal gland (C74), and malignant neoplasm of testis (C62). In the stacked bars for 2023–2024, bone cancers form the largest segment, with additional contributions from lymphoma, leukaemia, and smaller segments from adrenal and testicular cancers.

Earlier years in the chart show occasional smaller spikes for individual cancers, but none reach the combined height seen in 2024. The visualization emphasizes that a relatively small number of cancer types account for most of the recent increase in mortality within this age group.

The chart notes that in 2024 the listed causes (ranked 1–19) account for 69.2% of deaths associated with diseases in ICD-10 groups C00–D48 among 5–9-year-olds, and 22.1% of all disease-related deaths (A00–U99). Ill-defined causes (R99) and COVID-19 (U07) are excluded. Source: Socialstyrelsen cause-of-death database. Chart by @jukka235, dated 8 March 2026.

Various viruses are linked to various cancers. Early #COVID19 variants seem to have caused more pronounced acute lymphopenia and NK cell reduction/dysfunction in Swedes than later ones experienced in other Nordic countries. Are Swedish health authorities responsible for this cancer death surge?
