Having seen the Joyce Carol Oates very bad, not good tweet about romance and AI, I can't help thinking about the way that romance has been treated as a punching bag for so long and always by people who are completely unwilling to engage with the genre and know little about it.

I'm planning on having students do more in-class writing in both my freshman and upper-level classes. If you are too, let's share prompts? Here are some of mine that I'm tinkering with:

Hahaha I knew as soon as I saw this that it was yet another triumph of the UK publisher titling rules! (Still honestly don't understand it...SEI seems to work just fine for American books that do allow the more abstract main titles).

Perry: Republicans fought ‘indoctrination.’ Now they’re telling students what to study.
The conservative attack on higher education in states like Iowa is hard to watch. But it also provides an opportunity for blue states like Minnesota.

A few things: (1) AI should not be used to assist writing. Cognitive outsourcing is bad. (2) The college essay is on the decline because of labor as much as AI. Learning to write well requires a lot of personal contact which neoliberal logics of higher ed work against www.nytimes.com/2026/08/17/u...

Just as a matter of interest, *any* use of AI in scholarly writing is tantamount to plagiarism. You don’t know whose work the AI has trained on, so you can’t give them proper acknowledgment or make an appropriate citation.

If you are getting paid to write for those other outlets, then that makes sense! I just meant that as I understand the tax code you cannot deduct business expenses from salary income, unfortunately, only, e.g. 1099 income.

1. yes 2. rarely (once a month max, sometimes much less). have cut way back on this for budget reasons. 3. daily (bike commute built into my day helps with this) 4. rarely, though I talk on the phone to close friends and family very frequently.

2/2 4. Too many administrative tasks; sometimes grading and teaching emails, esp. in 3-course semesters. 5. Schedule the time; don't schedule more than is reasonable for your workload; make it fun, in a peaceful spot, add treats so you look forward to it.

1. Normally 2 and 3; currently 1 and 2 (chair load) 2. I aim for two 2-3 hours sessions but at busy times am very happy to manage 1. 3. Weekdays late morning or early afternoon, depending on my teaching schedule. Never early mornings; nights or weekends only under deadline. 1/2

It's the frame narrative for a short story (serialized in the Kaleidoscope) about a "Demon Ship" which is terrorizing the Mediterranean. In the issue I'm looking at 'Greek Corsairs' are mentioned once but otherwise the identity of the pirates is left very vague ('Mediterranean' is all you get)

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.
