I guess public execution was popular everywhere until relatively recently. I hadn’t realised how much of a public spectacle lynchings were in the US. Australian colonial violence was more about dispossession of land, and arguably, genocide. Thanks for the context, sad as it is.

Interesting question. For images with no alt text otherwise, it's better than nothing, but all the tools I've seen so far would fail on context, tone and humour, so a human editor is still important for this kind of accessibility I think

I don't like to be preachy and I don't judge you if you don't write alt text. But it's actually a fun and rewarding mental exercise to slow down and write about the image you're posting, while improving accessibility for people who need it. And to sneak in a bonus joke, you funny bastard.
161
Hannah Shelley, MLIS (Maggots, Lycanthropes & Ice Skeletons) @hannahshelley.site · 09/10/2026
Alt text shouldn't add new information, or provide too much commentary, or describe in excruciating detail things that aren't the point of the picture. You're ruining it!
110
Hannah Shelley, MLIS (Maggots, Lycanthropes & Ice Skeletons) @hannahshelley.site · 09/10/2026
Alt text for well-known meme formats are easy. E.g. you can say it's a "distracted boyfriend meme" and just describe the labels. Low effort memes can have low effort alt text, as long as it has the same information, that's equitable and matches the tone.
110
Hannah Shelley, MLIS (Maggots, Lycanthropes & Ice Skeletons) @hannahshelley.site · 09/10/2026
Alt text doesn't need to be clinical or lengthy. Match the tone of the picture. Crucially, don't explain jokes. Just give enough information to get the joke. Screen reader users deserve a laugh too, come on.
130
Hannah Shelley, MLIS (Maggots, Lycanthropes & Ice Skeletons) @hannahshelley.site · 09/10/2026
A good principle to aim for is: if I couldn't see the image, I could read the alt text and I wouldn't be missing out on anything. That means enough information to understand the point, but not so much that the point gets lost.
120
Hannah Shelley, MLIS (Maggots, Lycanthropes & Ice Skeletons) @hannahshelley.site · 09/10/2026
I believe the point of alt text on social media is to provide an equivalent experience of an image, not an exhaustive description of it. That often means translating a visual joke into text. It requires some thought. But you're a witty person. You can do it!

Lucky me!
I've got my Tamagotchi!

(a digital drawing of a lurid pink and blue tamagotchi, with yellow buttons. the digital creature within is dead.)And I've got my wristwatch phone!

(a digital drawing of my wrist, with a disproportionately large apple watch wrapped around it. i've a new message in my mygov inbox, according to the notification i've received, to which i've replied with a verbal "fuck off.")I've got so many friends on the internet...

(a digital drawing of myself, holding my phone with a sad look on my face. i'm about to ask my many friends on the internet, "you actually like me and don't just tolerate my weirdness, right?")I can never be alone!

(a digital drawing of myself, still holding my phone, this time in tears. my question has been met with a resounding silence.)
