I have been a guest at conventions where, during the pre-con walk through, my handler has pointed out the bar and mentioned how some guests are "more fun" and "get asked back," then names only men. Because a lot of female guests aren't comfortable hanging out around alcohol with strangers.

When I was in middle school, it was actually "safer"/more acceptable to be bi than it was to be gay or lesbian. I think it was because of the still-pervasive viewpoint of "it's hot to watch women make out with other women, but of COURSE they'll marry a man. So...biphobia disguised as bi acceptance.
